Most grammar mistakes Brazilians make in English have the same cause: translating word for word from Portuguese. “Eu tenho 15 anos” becomes “I have 15 years”, and “Está chovendo” becomes “Is raining”. In this guide you will find the most common ones, the correct form, and a short explanation of why English works differently, so you can stop making them for good.A maioria dos erros de gramática que os brasileiros cometem em inglês tem a mesma causa: traduzir palavra por palavra do português. “Eu tenho 15 anos” vira “I have 15 years”, e “Está chovendo” vira “Is raining”. Neste guia você vai encontrar os erros mais comuns, a forma correta e uma explicação curta de por que o inglês funciona de outro jeito, para você parar de cometê-los de vez.
A2 The classics: age, subjects and plurals
“I have 15 years” ✗
In Portuguese, we “have” an age. In English, you are an age. Use the verb be: I’m 15 or I’m 15 years old. Never say “I’m 15 years” without “old”: either say the number alone or the full expression.Em português, a gente “tem” uma idade. Em inglês, você é uma idade. Use o verbo be: I’m 15 ou I’m 15 years old. Nunca diga “I’m 15 years” sem o “old”: diga só o número ou a expressão completa.
✗ Wrong
A literal translation of “eu tenho”.Tradução literal de “eu tenho”.
I have 15 years. How many years do you have? (Tenho 15 anos. Quantos anos você tem?)
✓ Right
Age always takes the verb be.Idade sempre usa o verbo be.
I’m 15. How old are you? (Tenho 15 anos. Quantos anos você tem?)
- My little brother is eight years old. (Meu irmão mais novo tem oito anos.)
- I’m turning 16 next month. (Vou fazer 16 anos no mês que vem.)
- She has a 3-year-old daughter. (Ela tem uma filha de 3 anos.)
Age is not the only case. Many feelings and physical states that use “ter” or “estar com” in Portuguese use be + adjective in English.A idade não é o único caso. Muitos sentimentos e estados físicos que usam “ter” ou “estar com” em português usam be + adjetivo em inglês.
“Is raining” ✗: the missing subject
Portuguese can drop the subject: “Está chovendo”, “É tarde”, “É longe”. English cannot. Every English sentence needs a subject, so when there is no real one, use it. This “empty” it is used for weather, time, dates, distance and opinions.O português pode omitir o sujeito: “Está chovendo”, “É tarde”, “É longe”. O inglês não pode. Toda frase em inglês precisa de sujeito, então, quando não existe um sujeito real, use it. Esse it “vazio” aparece com clima, horas, datas, distâncias e opiniões.
| ✗ Wrong | ✓ Right | Português |
|---|---|---|
| Is raining. | It’s raining. | Está chovendo. |
| Is very hot today. | It’s very hot today. | Está muito quente hoje. |
| Is ten o’clock. | It’s ten o’clock. | São dez horas. |
| Is far from here? | Is it far from here? | É longe daqui? |
| Is important to study. | It’s important to study. | É importante estudar. |
| Was a great party. | It was a great party. | Foi uma festa ótima. |
“Tem” meaning “existe” = there is / there are
When “tem” means that something exists in a place, English uses there is (singular) or there are (plural), never “have” without a subject.Quando “tem” significa que algo existe em um lugar, o inglês usa there is (singular) ou there are (plural), nunca “have” sem sujeito.
There’s a pharmacy near my school. There are a lot of people here.Tem uma farmácia perto da minha escola. Tem muita gente aqui.
“People is” ✗
In Portuguese, “o povo” and “a gente” are singular, so Brazilians often say “people is”. In English, people is the plural of person, so it always takes a plural verb: people are, people have, people think. The same is true for police: The police are coming.Em português, “o povo” e “a gente” são singulares, então os brasileiros costumam dizer “people is”. Em inglês, people é o plural de person, então sempre leva verbo no plural: people are, people have, people think. O mesmo vale para police: A polícia está chegando.
“More easy” ✗: comparatives
Portuguese uses “mais” with almost every adjective. In English, short adjectives (one syllable, or two syllables ending in -y) take -er: easier, cheaper, bigger. Only longer adjectives take more: more expensive, more interesting. Never use both together: “more easier” is wrong.O português usa “mais” com quase todo adjetivo. Em inglês, adjetivos curtos (uma sílaba, ou duas sílabas terminadas em -y) recebem -er: easier, cheaper, bigger. Só os adjetivos mais longos usam more: more expensive, more interesting. Nunca use os dois juntos: “more easier” está errado.
| ✗ Wrong | ✓ Right | Português |
|---|---|---|
| more easy | easier | mais fácil |
| more big | bigger | maior |
| more good | better | melhor |
| more bad | worse | pior |
| more far | farther / further | mais longe |
| expensiver | more expensive | mais caro |
“Go to home” ✗
With verbs of movement (go, come, get, arrive), the word home works like an adverb, so there is no preposition: go home, get home. When you are not moving, use at home: I’m at home.Com verbos de movimento (go, come, get, arrive), a palavra home funciona como advérbio, então não leva preposição: go home, get home. Quando não há movimento, use at home: Estou em casa.
go / come / get home
Movement: no “to”.Movimento: sem “to”.
I’m tired. I’m going home. (Estou cansado. Vou para casa.)
at home
Location: use “at”.Lugar onde se está: use “at”.
Is your mom at home? (Sua mãe está em casa?)
B1 Nouns, verbs and prepositions
“Informations” and “advices” ✗
Some nouns are countable in Portuguese but uncountable in English. They have no plural form, they never take a / an, and they use a singular verb. To count them, use a piece of, or another word such as a tip or a suggestion.Alguns substantivos são contáveis em português, mas incontáveis em inglês. Eles não têm plural, nunca levam a / an e usam verbo no singular. Para contá-los, use a piece of, ou outra palavra, como a tip ou a suggestion.

- My teacher gave me a great piece of advice. (Minha professora me deu um ótimo conselho.)
- The news is on at eight. (O jornal passa às oito.)
- We have a lot of homework this week. (Temos muita lição de casa esta semana.)
“Explain me” ✗
In Portuguese, “me explica” is perfect. In English, some verbs cannot be followed directly by the person. With explain, say, describe, suggest and introduce, the person needs to. Other verbs, like tell, give, show and send, take the person directly.Em português, “me explica” está perfeito. Em inglês, alguns verbos não podem ser seguidos diretamente pela pessoa. Com explain, say, describe, suggest e introduce, a pessoa precisa de to. Outros verbos, como tell, give, show e send, recebem a pessoa diretamente.
| ✗ Wrong | ✓ Right | Português |
|---|---|---|
| Can you explain me this? | Can you explain this to me? | Você pode me explicar isso? |
| She said me the truth. | She told me the truth. | Ela me contou a verdade. |
| Describe me your house. | Describe your house to me. | Descreva sua casa para mim. |
| He suggested me a book. | He suggested a book to me. | Ele me sugeriu um livro. |
| Let me introduce you my sister. | Let me introduce you to my sister. | Quero te apresentar à minha irmã. |
Say or tell?
Say focuses on the words: He said hello. Tell focuses on the listener, so it needs a person: He told me a story. If you want a person after the verb, tell is usually the answer.Say foca nas palavras: Ele disse oi. Tell foca em quem ouve, então precisa de uma pessoa: Ele me contou uma história. Se você quer uma pessoa logo depois do verbo, tell costuma ser a resposta.
“I am agree” ✗
“Estou de acordo” makes Brazilians add am, but agree is a verb, not an adjective. So the negative and the question use do, like any other verb.“Estou de acordo” faz os brasileiros acrescentarem am, mas agree é verbo, não adjetivo. Por isso, a negativa e a pergunta usam do, como qualquer outro verbo.
- I agree with you. (Concordo com você.)
- I don’t agree. / I disagree. (Não concordo. / Discordo.)
- Do you agree with the new rule? (Você concorda com a nova regra?)
“Depends of” ✗: prepositions that change
Many verbs and adjectives take a different preposition in English. “Depender de” is depend on, not “depend of”. There is no shortcut here: learn each verb together with its preposition.Muitos verbos e adjetivos levam uma preposição diferente em inglês. “Depender de” é depend on, e não “depend of”. Aqui não tem atalho: aprenda cada verbo junto com a sua preposição.
| ✗ Wrong | ✓ Right | Português |
|---|---|---|
| depend of | depend on | depender de |
| married with | married to | casado com |
| dream with | dream about / of | sonhar com |
| think in | think about / of | pensar em |
| good in math | good at math | bom em matemática |
| wait the bus | wait for the bus | esperar o ônibus |
| listen music | listen to music | ouvir música |

“Fazer uma pergunta” is ask a question. Portuguese uses “fazer”, “tirar” and “tomar” in many fixed expressions, and English uses a different verb in each one. Learn them as complete chunks.“Fazer uma pergunta” é ask a question. O português usa “fazer”, “tirar” e “tomar” em várias expressões fixas, e o inglês usa um verbo diferente em cada uma. Aprenda essas expressões como blocos completos.

| make a photo | take a photo | tirar uma foto |
| take a good grade | get a good grade | tirar uma nota boa |
| give attention | pay attention | prestar atenção |
“How is called?” ✗
“Como se chama?” is not “How is called?”. It has two problems: the subject is missing, and English uses what, not how, to ask for a name. To ask for a word in English, use How do you say … in English?“Como se chama?” não é “How is called?”. Tem dois problemas: falta o sujeito, e o inglês usa what, e não how, para perguntar um nome. Para perguntar uma palavra em inglês, use How do you say … in English?
- What’s this called in English? (Como se chama isso em inglês?)
- What’s the name of that song? (Como se chama aquela música?)
- How do you say “saudade” in English? (Como se diz “saudade” em inglês?)
- What’s your name? / What’s your dog’s name? (Como você se chama? / Como se chama seu cachorro?)
“The life is beautiful” ✗: articles with general ideas
Portuguese uses “o / a / os / as” with abstract ideas and with things in general: “a vida”, “o amor”, “os brasileiros”. English uses no article when it talks about something in general. Use the only when the noun is specific.O português usa “o / a / os / as” com ideias abstratas e com coisas em geral: “a vida”, “o amor”, “os brasileiros”. O inglês usa nenhum artigo quando fala de algo em geral. Use the só quando o substantivo é específico.
General: no article
Ideas, subjects and groups in general.Ideias, matérias e grupos em geral.

B2 Time expressions and negatives
“Since 3 years” ✗: for, since and ago
“Há 3 anos” and “desde” cause a lot of confusion. Use for with a period of time (3 years, two weeks) and since with a starting point (2020, Monday, I was a child). When the action continues now, English uses the present perfect, not the simple present. For a finished action in the past, use the past simple with ago.“Há 3 anos” e “desde” causam muita confusão. Use for com um período de tempo (3 anos, duas semanas) e since com um ponto de partida (2020, segunda-feira, quando eu era criança). Quando a ação continua até agora, o inglês usa o present perfect, e não o presente simples. Para uma ação terminada no passado, use o passado simples com ago.
for + period

I’ve studied English for three years. (Estudo inglês há três anos.)
since + starting point

| How long time do you work here? | How long have you worked here? | Há quanto tempo você trabalha aqui? |
One “há”, two meanings

“I don’t know nothing” ✗: double negatives
In Portuguese, “não … nada”, “não … ninguém” and “não … nunca” are correct. In standard English, a sentence has only one negative. Either use a negative verb + anything / anybody / ever, or an affirmative verb + nothing / nobody / never. You may hear double negatives in songs and films, but they are informal, non-standard English and are marked wrong in exams.Em português, “não … nada”, “não … ninguém” e “não … nunca” estão corretos. No inglês padrão, a frase tem só uma negação. Use o verbo na negativa + anything / anybody / ever, ou o verbo na afirmativa + nothing / nobody / never. Você pode ouvir dupla negação em músicas e filmes, mas é inglês informal, fora da norma padrão, e conta como erro nas provas.
