Hard or Hardly? Adverbs with Two Forms

Advérbios com Duas FormasAdjectives and AdverbsB1

I work hard and I hardly work say opposite things. Some English adverbs have two forms, one without -ly and one with -ly, and the two forms often have completely different meanings. Learn the most common pairs and stop saying the opposite of what you mean.I work hard e I hardly work dizem coisas opostas. Alguns advérbios em inglês têm duas formas, uma sem -ly e outra com -ly, e muitas vezes as duas têm sentidos completamente diferentes. Aprenda os pares mais comuns e pare de dizer o contrário do que você quer dizer.

B1 Adverbs that look like adjectives

Most adverbs end in -ly (slow → slowly). But a group of very common adverbs has exactly the same form as the adjective. You can tell them apart only by their position: the adjective describes a noun, the adverb describes a verb.A maioria dos advérbios termina em -ly (slow → slowly). Mas um grupo de advérbios muito comuns tem exatamente a mesma forma do adjetivo. Só dá para diferenciar pela posição: o adjetivo descreve um substantivo, e o advérbio descreve um verbo.

adjective

Describes a noun.Descreve um substantivo.

It was a hard test. (Foi uma prova difícil.)

adverb

Describes a verb.Descreve um verbo.

We studied hard for the test. (A gente estudou muito para a prova.)

B1 Hard / hardly, late / lately, near / nearly

These are the three pairs that cause the most trouble. The -ly form is not a “more correct” version of the other one: it is a different word with a different meaning.Esses são os três pares que mais causam problemas. A forma com -ly não é uma versão “mais correta” da outra: é outra palavra, com outro sentido.

WordExamplePortuguês
hard = with effortHe trains hard for the marathon.Ele treina pesado para a maratona.
hardly = almost notI hardly slept last night.Quase não dormi ontem à noite.
late = not on timeSorry, I got up late.Desculpa, acordei tarde.
lately = recentlyHave you seen any good films lately?Você viu algum filme bom ultimamente?
near = close toWe live near the beach.A gente mora perto da praia.
nearly = almostIt’s nearly midnight.Já é quase meia-noite.

How to use hardly

Hardly already has a negative meaning, so we don’t add not. It usually goes before the main verb, or after be and auxiliaries like can. It is very common with any, ever and anyone.Hardly já tem sentido negativo, então não acrescentamos not. Ele costuma vir antes do verbo principal ou depois de be e de auxiliares como can. É muito comum com any, ever e anyone.

  • I can hardly hear you. The music is too loud. (Mal consigo te ouvir. A música está alta demais.)
  • There’s hardly any milk left. (Quase não sobrou leite.)
  • We hardly ever eat out. (A gente quase nunca come fora.)
  • Hardly anyone came to the meeting. (Quase ninguém veio à reunião.)

Don’t double the negative

✗ I can’t hardly see. ✓ I can hardly see.Hardly já significa “quase não”. Com can’t, a frase fica com duas negações, o que não é aceito no inglês padrão.

B1 More pairs with different meanings

In these pairs, the form without -ly keeps a physical or literal meaning, and the -ly form usually has a more abstract one, like “very much” or “carefully”.Nesses pares, a forma sem -ly mantém um sentido físico ou literal, e a forma com -ly costuma ter um sentido mais abstrato, como “muito” ou “com atenção”.

freely = without limitsYou can speak freely here.Aqui você pode falar à vontade.
close = nearDon’t sit so close to the screen.Não sente tão perto da tela.
closely = carefullyWatch closely and do the same.Observe com atenção e faça igual.
deep = far downThe divers went deep into the sea.Os mergulhadores desceram fundo no mar.
deeply = very muchI’m deeply sorry for your loss.Sinto muitíssimo pela sua perda.
