The Continuous Tenses: Forms and Uses

Os Tempos Contínuos: Formas e UsosVerb Tense ReviewsB1–B2

“I’m studying”, “I was sleeping”, “I’ll be travelling”, “I’ve been waiting”: all the continuous tenses share the same idea and the same building block, be + -ing. They show an action in progress, unfinished or temporary. Once you see the pattern, six tenses become one simple logic.“I’m studying”, “I was sleeping”, “I’ll be travelling”, “I’ve been waiting”: todos os tempos contínuos têm a mesma ideia e a mesma peça básica, be + -ing. Eles mostram uma ação em andamento, inacabada ou temporária. Quando você enxerga o padrão, seis tempos viram uma lógica só.

B1 One pattern, six tenses

Every continuous tense is made with the verb be in the right tense + the main verb with -ing. Only be changes; the -ing verb stays the same.Todo tempo contínuo é formado pelo verbo be no tempo certo + o verbo principal com -ing. Só o be muda; o verbo com -ing continua igual.

Subject+be (in the right tense)+verb + -ing

Negatives and questions

The first auxiliary does the work: put not after it, or put it before the subject. I wasn’t sleeping. Are you coming? How long have you been waiting?Quem trabalha é o primeiro auxiliar: coloque not depois dele, ou coloque-o antes do sujeito. I wasn’t sleeping. (Eu não estava dormindo.) Are you coming? (Você vem?) How long have you been waiting? (Há quanto tempo você está esperando?)

What do the continuous tenses express?

IdeaExamplePortuguês
in progress at a momentDon’t call now, I’m driving.Não liga agora, estou dirigindo.
temporary situationI’m living with my cousin until I find a flat.Estou morando com meu primo até achar um apartamento.
background in a storyIt was raining and people were running to the metro.Estava chovendo e as pessoas corriam para o metrô.
changing situationYour English is getting better and better.Seu inglês está ficando cada vez melhor.

Simple or continuous?

The simple tenses show the action as a whole: a fact, a habit, a finished event. The continuous tenses show the action from the inside, while it is happening.Os tempos simples mostram a ação como um todo: um fato, um hábito, um acontecimento concluído. Os tempos contínuos mostram a ação por dentro, enquanto ela acontece.

Simple: the whole action

A habit or a complete event.Um hábito ou um acontecimento completo.

I read the news every morning. (Leio as notícias toda manhã.) I read the book last week. (Li o livro na semana passada.)

Continuous: in progress

The action is happening or was happening.A ação está ou estava acontecendo.

I’m reading a great book. (Estou lendo um livro ótimo.) I was reading when you called. (Eu estava lendo quando você ligou.)

Teacher’s tip: “estou fazendo há…”

In Portuguese we say “Estudo inglês há dois anos” or “Estou esperando há uma hora” in the present. English needs the present perfect continuous here: I’ve been studying English for two years. Never “I’m studying English for two years”.Em português dizemos “Estudo inglês há dois anos” ou “Estou esperando há uma hora” no presente. O inglês precisa do present perfect continuous aqui: I’ve been studying English for two years. Nunca “I’m studying English for two years”.

B2 Stative verbs and special uses

Some verbs describe states, not actions: what we think, feel, have or perceive. These stative verbs are not normally used in any continuous tense.Alguns verbos descrevem estados, não ações: o que pensamos, sentimos, temos ou percebemos. Esses verbos de estado normalmente não são usados em nenhum tempo contínuo.
