Verb + Object + Infinitive or Gerund

Verbo + Objeto + Infinitivo ou Gerúndio-ing and the InfinitiveB2

“Eu quero que você venha” is not “I want that you come”. In English, many verbs are followed by an object + infinitive or an object + gerund, and choosing the right pattern is one of the clearest signs of a B2 speaker.“Eu quero que você venha” não é “I want that you come”. Em inglês, muitos verbos são seguidos de objeto + infinitivo ou objeto + gerúndio, e escolher a estrutura certa é um dos sinais mais claros de um falante de nível B2.

B2 Verb + object + to-infinitive

Verbs of wanting, asking, ordering, advising and allowing are followed by a person (the object) and then to + base verb. The object is the person who does the second action. If the object is a pronoun, use the object form: me, you, him, her, us, them.Verbos de querer, pedir, mandar, aconselhar e permitir são seguidos de uma pessoa (o objeto) e depois de to + verbo na forma base. O objeto é quem faz a segunda ação. Se o objeto for um pronome, use a forma oblíqua: me, you, him, her, us, them.

Subject+verb+object+(not) to + base verb

  • The teacher told us not to use our phones during the test. (A professora mandou a gente não usar o celular durante a prova.)
  • Can you remind Pedro to bring the projector? (Você pode lembrar o Pedro de trazer o projetor?)

ask, tell, order, begShe asked me to call her back.Ela me pediu para retornar a ligação.
advise, encourage, persuade, convinceHe persuaded his boss to give him a day off.Ele convenceu o chefe a dar uma folga para ele.
allow, permit, enable, forceThe app allows you to pay with Pix.O aplicativo permite que você pague com Pix.
remind, warn, invite, teachThey invited us to stay for dinner.Eles nos convidaram para ficar para o jantar.

No “that” after want

✗ I want that you come to my party. ✓ I want you to come to my party.Em português usamos “querer que + subjuntivo”, mas em inglês want, would like e expect pedem objeto + to-infinitive, nunca “that”.

B2 Make, let, help + object + base verb

Make (force or cause) and let (allow) are followed by the object and the base verb, with no to. Help accepts both forms: help me carry and help me to carry are correct, but the form without to is more common.Make (obrigar ou causar) e let (deixar) são seguidos do objeto e do verbo na forma base, sem to. Help aceita as duas formas: help me carry e help me to carry estão corretas, mas a forma sem to é mais comum.

  • My mother made me clean my room before going out. (Minha mãe me fez arrumar o quarto antes de sair.)
  • That film always makes me cry. (Esse filme sempre me faz chorar.)
  • Our coach lets us choose the music during training. (Nosso treinador deixa a gente escolher a música durante o treino.)

Active: make + base verb

No to after the object.Sem to depois do objeto.

Passive: be made + to-infinitive

In the passive, to comes back.Na voz passiva, o to volta.

He was made to wait for an hour. (Ele foi obrigado a esperar uma hora.)

Let has no passive

Let is not used in the passive. Use be allowed to instead: We weren’t allowed to leave early.Let não é usado na voz passiva. Use be allowed to: We weren’t allowed to leave early. (Não deixaram a gente sair mais cedo.)

B2 Perception verbs: base verb or -ing

After see, hear, watch, notice and feel + object, we can use the base verb or the -ing form. The base verb shows the complete action, from start to finish. The -ing form shows the action in progress, or only part of it.Depois de see, hear, watch, notice e feel + objeto, podemos usar o verbo na forma base ou a forma -ing. A forma base mostra a ação completa, do começo ao fim. A forma -ing mostra a ação em andamento, ou só uma parte dela.

Complete action

We saw the whole event.Vimos o acontecimento inteiro.

I saw the bus hit the car. (Eu vi o ônibus bater no carro.)

Action in progress

We saw part of it, while it was happening.Vimos parte dela, enquanto acontecia.

B2 Verb + object + gerund, and verbs that never take object + infinitive

Some verbs are followed by an object and an -ing form: mind, imagine, can’t stand, catch, find, keep, leave. Stop, prevent and discourage use object + from + -ing.Alguns verbos são seguidos de objeto e forma -ing: mind, imagine, can’t stand, catch, find, keep, leave. Stop, prevent e discourage usam objeto + from + -ing.

  • The rain prevented us from going to the beach. (A chuva impediu a gente de ir à praia.)
  • Sorry I kept you waiting. (Desculpa ter feito você esperar.)

In formal English, a possessive can replace the object before the gerund: I appreciate your helping me. In everyday speech, I appreciate you helping me is more common. No inglês formal, um possessivo pode substituir o objeto antes do gerúndio: I appreciate your helping me. Na fala do dia a dia, I appreciate you helping me é mais comum.

Suggest, recommend, explain, say

These verbs never take object + to-infinitive. Use a that-clause or a gerund: She suggested that we take a taxi or She suggested taking a taxi.Esses verbos nunca levam objeto + to-infinitive. Use uma oração com that ou um gerúndio: She suggested that we take a taxi ou She suggested taking a taxi (Ela sugeriu que pegássemos um táxi).

With explain and say, the person comes with to: Can you explain the rule to me?Com explain e say, a pessoa vem com to: Can you explain the rule to me? (Você pode me explicar a regra?)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these
