Another, Other, Others

Another, Other e OthersArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersB1

In Portuguese, “outro”, “outra”, “outros” and “outras” change with the noun. In English, the choice between another, other, others and the other(s) depends on something else: whether the noun is singular or plural, and whether we know exactly which one we mean.Em português, “outro”, “outra”, “outros” e “outras” mudam de acordo com o substantivo. Em inglês, a escolha entre another, other, others e the other(s) depende de outra coisa: se o substantivo está no singular ou no plural, e se sabemos exatamente de qual estamos falando.

B1 Another: one more or a different one

Another is an + other written as one word. Because it contains “an”, we use it only with singular countable nouns. It has two meanings: “one more” (mais um) and “a different one” (um outro, diferente).Another é an + other escrito numa palavra só. Como contém “an”, só usamos com substantivos contáveis no singular. Tem dois sentidos: “mais um” e “um outro, diferente”.

another+singular countable noun
  • Can I have another piece of pizza? It’s delicious. (Posso pegar mais um pedaço de pizza? Está uma delícia.)
  • This pen doesn’t work. Do you have another one? (Esta caneta não funciona. Você tem outra?)
  • I don’t like this restaurant. Let’s try another place. (Não gosto deste restaurante. Vamos tentar outro lugar.)
  • Rafael is looking for another job closer to home. (O Rafael está procurando outro emprego mais perto de casa.)

Another + number + plural

There is one important exception: another can go before a number and a plural noun when it means “more”, especially with time, money and distance.Existe uma exceção importante: another pode vir antes de um número e de um substantivo no plural quando significa “mais”, principalmente com tempo, dinheiro e distância.

We’re staying in Rio for another three days. (Vamos ficar no Rio por mais três dias.) I need another 50 reais. (Preciso de mais 50 reais.)

Another as a pronoun

Another can also stand alone, without a noun, when the noun is clear from the context. You can say another or another one.Another também pode aparecer sozinho, sem substantivo, quando o substantivo está claro pelo contexto. Você pode dizer another ou another one.

  • That cookie was great. Can I have another? (Esse biscoito estava ótimo. Posso pegar outro?)
  • One problem is the price; another is the location. (Um problema é o preço; outro é a localização.)

B1 Other and the other

Other works like an adjective. It never takes an -s when it comes before a noun, just like other English adjectives. We use it with plural nouns and uncountable nouns, or after words like some, any, no, my and the.Other funciona como adjetivo. Nunca leva -s quando vem antes de um substantivo, como qualquer adjetivo em inglês. Usamos com substantivos no plural e incontáveis, ou depois de palavras como some, any, no, my e the.

  • Do you have this shirt in other colors? (Vocês têm esta camisa em outras cores?)
  • Some other students are coming later. (Alguns outros alunos vão chegar mais tarde.)
  • There’s no other way to get there. (Não tem outro jeito de chegar lá.)
  • I need other information before I decide. (Preciso de outras informações antes de decidir.)

The other: the specific one that remains

Use the other when you know exactly which one you mean, usually the second of two or the last one in a group. It works with singular and plural nouns.Use the other quando você sabe exatamente de qual está falando, normalmente o segundo de dois ou o último de um grupo. Funciona com substantivos no singular e no plural.

another

Any one more, not specific. The group may be open.Mais um qualquer, não específico. O grupo pode ser aberto.

the other

The specific one that is left, usually from a pair.O específico que sobrou, normalmente de um par.

  • The bakery is on the other side of the street. (A padaria fica do outro lado da rua.)

B1 Others and the others

Others, with -s, is a pronoun. It replaces “other + plural noun”, so it is never followed by a noun. Others means “outras pessoas / outras coisas” in general; the others means “the rest of a specific group”.Others, com -s, é pronome. Ele substitui “other + substantivo no plural”, por isso nunca vem seguido de substantivo. Others significa “outras pessoas / outras coisas” de forma geral; the others significa “o resto de um grupo específico”.

  • Some students prefer online classes; others prefer face-to-face classes. (Alguns alunos preferem aulas on-line; outros preferem aulas presenciais.)

The golden rule

If no noun comes after it and the meaning is plural, add -s: others, the others.Se vem um substantivo depois da palavra, não tem -s: other people, the other books.
