Small Talk and Networking at Work

Conversa Informal e Networking no TrabalhoTravel and WorkB1–B2

Small talk is the light, friendly conversation people have before a meeting starts, in the elevator, at the coffee machine or at a work event. It may look unimportant, but it is how colleagues build trust and how many job opportunities begin. Learn how to start a conversation, choose safe topics, keep the conversation going, introduce yourself at events and end politely.

B1 Starting and keeping a conversation

Conversation starters

A good opener is short, positive and easy to answer. Comment on something you are both experiencing, or ask about the other person’s day, week or weekend.

Monday morningDid you have a good weekend?Teve um bom fim de semana?
midweekHow’s your week going so far?Como está sendo a sua semana?
FridayAny plans for the weekend?Algum plano para o fim de semana?
after a tripHow was your trip to Chicago?Como foi a sua viagem para Chicago?
the weatherIt’s so hot today, isn’t it?Está muito calor hoje, né?
before a meetingHave you been busy this week?A semana está corrida para você?

“How are you?” is a greeting

At work, How are you? or How’s it going? is usually just a friendly greeting, not a real question about your life. A short, positive answer is expected: Good, thanks! And you? Save the long answer for close friends. And you? (Tudo bem, obrigado!

Safe topics

These topics work almost everywhere, with almost anyone. Tap each one to listen to a model question.

Topics to avoid

With people you do not know well, avoid questions about salary, age, weight or appearance, religion and politics. Comments that are friendly in Brazil, like “você engordou?” or “quanto você ganha?”, can sound very personal in English-speaking workplaces.

Keeping the conversation going

The secret of good small talk is simple: answer, add a detail and ask back. A one-word answer ends the conversation; a detail and a question keep it alive. Short reactions show that you are listening.O segredo de um bom small talk é simples: responda, acrescente um detalhe e devolva a pergunta.

conversation killer

A one-word answer and nothing else.

“Did you have a good weekend?” “Yes.” (Teve um bom fim de semana? Sim.)

conversation builder

Answer, add a detail, ask back.Responda, acrescente um detalhe, devolva a pergunta.

“Yes, I went hiking with some friends. How about you?” (Sim, fiz uma trilha com uns amigos. E você?)

  • Oh, really? How was it? (Ah, é mesmo? Como foi?)
  • That sounds like fun! (Parece divertido!)
  • Same here. I love that place. (Eu também. Adoro esse lugar.)
  • I’ve always wanted to go there. What did you think? (Sempre quis ir lá. O que você achou?)
  • No way! That’s amazing. (Não acredito! Que incrível.)
  • Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. (Ah, não, sinto muito.)

B2 Networking events

Introducing yourself and others

At conferences, fairs and company events, you will need a short, clear way to say who you are and what you do. Two or three sentences are enough: your name, your role and one interesting detail.

introduce yourselfHi, I’m Alex. I work in marketing at a tech company in São Paulo.Oi, sou Alex.
introduce someoneSam, let me introduce you to Jordan. Jordan leads our sales team.
respondNice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.Prazer em te conhecer. Já ouvi falar muito de você.
ask about the eventWhat brings you here today?O que te traz aqui hoje?
ask about their jobWhat do you do? / What’s your role?Com o que você trabalha? / Qual é a sua função?
ask about their careerHow did you get into this field?Como você começou nessa área?

Meet or see?

Say Nice to meet you the first time you meet someone. When you see the person again, say Nice to see you again or Good to see you. “Nice to meet you” to an old colleague sounds like you forgot them.Diga Nice to meet you na primeira vez que você conhece alguém. Quando encontrar a pessoa de novo, diga Nice to see you again ou Good to see you. Dizer “Nice to meet you” para um colega antigo soa como se você tivesse esquecido a pessoa.

AlexHi! Is anyone sitting here?Oi! Tem alguém sentado aqui?
SamNo, go ahead. Are you enjoying the conference so far?Não, pode sentar. Está gostando do congresso até agora?
AlexYes, the first talk was really interesting. I’m Alex, by the way.Sim, a primeira palestra foi muito interessante. Aliás, sou Alex.
SamNice to meet you, Alex. I’m Sam. What do you do?Prazer, Alex. Sou Sam. Com o que você trabalha?
AlexI’m a project manager at a logistics company. How about you?Sou gerente de projetos numa empresa de logística. E você?
SamI work in software development. We actually build tools for logistics companies.
AlexReally? That’s a coincidence. I’d love to hear more about that.Sério? Que coincidência. Adoraria saber mais sobre isso.
SamSure! The next session is starting, but here’s my card. Let’s keep in touch.Claro! Vamos manter contato.

Ending the conversation politely

At events, people expect conversations to be short, so it is perfectly polite to move on. Give a reason, say something positive and, if you want, suggest staying in touch.

  • It was great talking to you. (Foi ótimo conversar com você.)
  • I’ll let you get back to the event. (Vou deixar você voltar para o evento.)
  • I’m going to grab another coffee, but let’s keep in touch.
  • Can I add you on LinkedIn? (Posso te adicionar no LinkedIn?)

Following up after the event

A short message a day or two later helps people remember you. Mention where you met, something you talked about and a simple next step.

  • Hi Sam, it was great meeting you at the logistics conference on Tuesday.
  • I really enjoyed our chat about tracking software.
  • Would you be free for a quick call next week?
  • Best regards, Alex (Atenciosamente, Alex)

“Let’s grab lunch sometime”

Phrases like Let’s grab lunch sometime or We should get coffee one day are often just a friendly way to end a conversation, not a real plan. If you really want to meet, suggest a day: Are you free for lunch on Thursday?Frases como Let’s grab lunch sometime (Vamos almoçar qualquer dia) ou We should get coffee one day (A gente devia tomar um café um dia) muitas vezes são só uma forma simpática de encerrar a conversa, e não um plano de verdade, igual ao nosso “vamos marcar”. Se você quer mesmo encontrar a pessoa, sugira um dia: Are you free for lunch on Thursday? (Você está livre para almoçar na quinta?)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ Pleasure to know you. ✓ Nice to meet you.“Conhecer alguém” pela primeira vez é meet, não “know”.

✗ I work with marketing. ✓ I work in marketing.Para a sua área, use work in.

✗ What is your function? ✓ What do you do? / What’s your role?“Função” no trabalho é role ou position.

✗ I have many works this week. ✓ I have a lot of work this week.Work (trabalho) é incontável.

✗ Nice to meet you! (to a colleague you already know) ✓ Nice to see you again!Para quem você já conhece, use see.

✗ How much do you earn? ✓ How do you like your new job?
