Narrative Tenses

Tempos NarrativosPast TensesB1–C1

Every good story mixes past tenses. The past simple moves the action forward, the past continuous paints the scene, and the past perfect takes us back to something that happened earlier. These are the narrative tenses, and they are essential for telling anecdotes, writing essays and understanding texts in exams like ENEM, FUVEST and Cambridge.Toda boa história mistura tempos do passado.

B1 Past simple and past continuous

The past simple tells the main events of a story, one after the other. The past continuous (was/were + -ing) describes the background: what was happening around those events, or an action in progress that was interrupted.O past simple conta os acontecimentos principais da história, um depois do outro.

Past continuous+when+past simple
  • It was raining and everyone was waiting for the bus. (Estava chovendo e todo mundo estava esperando o ônibus.)
  • I was cooking dinner when the lights went out. (Eu estava fazendo o jantar quando a luz acabou.)
  • She opened the door, looked around and called the police. (Ela abriu a porta, olhou em volta e chamou a polícia.)
  • While we were driving to Ubatuba, the car broke down. (Enquanto íamos para Ubatuba, o carro quebrou.)

When usually introduces the short action (past simple). While usually introduces the long action (past continuous). Two past continuous verbs with while show two actions happening at the same time: “While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.”When costuma introduzir a ação curta (past simple). While costuma introduzir a ação longa (past continuous). While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.”

When + past simple

One action happened after the other.Uma ação aconteceu depois da outra.

When the teacher arrived, we started the test. (Quando a professora chegou, começamos a prova.)

When + past continuous

An action was already in progress.Uma ação já estava em andamento.

When the teacher arrived, we were doing the test.

State verbs

Verbs like know, want, believe, own and need are not normally used in the continuous form, even in the background of a story. Say “I knew the answer”, not “I was knowing the answer”.Verbos como know, want, believe, own e need normalmente não são usados na forma contínua, nem no pano de fundo de uma história. Diga “I knew the answer”, e não “I was knowing the answer”.

B1+ The past perfect: going further back

When you are already telling a story in the past and need to mention something that happened before that moment, use the past perfect: had + past participle. It is the Portuguese “tinha feito”, but English uses it more strictly when the order of events matters.

Subject+had+past participle
  • When I got to the station, the train had already left.
  • She was nervous because she had never flown before.
  • By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the kitchen.

The choice of tense can change the meaning completely. Look at the two sentences: “When I arrived, the party started” (I arrived, then it started). “When I arrived, the party had started” (it started before I arrived; I was late).A escolha do tempo pode mudar o sentido completamente. Veja as duas frases: “When I arrived, the party started” (eu cheguei e então a festa começou). “When I arrived, the party had started” (a festa começou antes de eu chegar; cheguei atrasado).

Teacher’s tip

Don’t use the past perfect for everything in the past. If the events are told in the order they happened, the past simple is enough: “I woke up, had a shower and left.” With before and after, the order is already clear, so the past perfect is optional.Não use o past perfect para tudo no passado. Se os fatos são contados na ordem em que aconteceram, o past simple basta: “I woke up, had a shower and left.” Com before e after, a ordem já está clara, então o past perfect é opcional.

B2 Past perfect continuous and the future in the past

The past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) shows how long an activity had been going on before another past moment. It is also used to explain a visible result in the past: someone was tired, wet or red-eyed because of an earlier activity.O past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) mostra há quanto tempo uma atividade estava acontecendo antes de outro momento do passado.

  • We had been waiting for two hours when the doctor finally called us.
  • His eyes were red because he had been crying. (Os olhos dele estavam vermelhos porque ele tinha chorado.)
  • The ground was wet. It had been raining all night. (O chão estava molhado. Tinha chovido a noite toda.)
TenseExamplePortuguêsFocus
Past perfectShe had written three chapters.Ela tinha escrito três capítulos.completed result, how many
Past perfect continuousShe had been writing all morning.Ela estava escrevendo havia a manhã toda.activity, how long

Future in the past

In stories we often talk about plans and predictions from the point of view of the past. Use was/were going to for plans (often plans that didn’t happen) and would for predictions or what happened later.

  • I was going to call you, but my phone died. (Eu ia te ligar, mas meu celular descarregou.)
  • She didn’t know it yet, but that trip would change her life.

For past habits that set the scene, we use used to and would: “Every summer we would go to my grandparents’ farm in Minas.” Would is only for repeated actions, not states: “I used to have long hair”, never “I would have long hair”.Para hábitos do passado que ambientam a história, usamos used to e would: “Every summer we would go to my grandparents’ farm in Minas.” Would só serve para ações repetidas, não para estados: “I used to have long hair”, nunca “I would have long hair”.

C1 Style: inversion, participle clauses and the narrative present

At C1, narrative tenses become a tool for style. Writers use them to create suspense, control rhythm and sound more formal. These structures are common in literature, journalism and exam texts.

Inversion for dramatic effect

To show that one event happened immediately after another, formal English uses Hardly / Scarcely had … when and No sooner had … than, with the past perfect and inverted word order.

  • Hardly had we sat down when the fire alarm went off.
  • No sooner had she published the post than it went viral. (Assim que ela publicou o post, ele viralizou.)

Participle clauses

Participle clauses make a story more concise. Having + past participle shows an earlier action (like the past perfect). An -ing clause shows an action happening at the same time. The subject of both parts must be the same.

  • Having finished the report, Marcos went home.
  • Walking along the beach, I found an old bottle with a note inside.

Dangling participles

“Walking into the room, the lights went off” means the lights were walking. The subject must match: “Walking into the room, I noticed the lights were off.”“Walking into the room, the lights went off” quer dizer que as luzes estavam andando. O sujeito tem que coincidir: “Walking into the room, I noticed the lights were off.”

The narrative present

In jokes, informal anecdotes and summaries of films or books, speakers often switch to the present to make the story more vivid: “So I’m walking home, and this guy comes up to me and says…” Portuguese does the same (“Aí eu tô andando e chega um cara…”). In formal writing, stay with the narrative tenses.Em piadas, casos informais e resumos de filmes ou livros, é comum mudar para o presente para deixar a história mais viva: “So I’m walking home, and this guy comes up to me and says…”

Common Mistakes

Watch out

✗ I was taking a shower when the phone was ringing. ✓ I was taking a shower when the phone rang.A ação curta que interrompe vai no past simple.

✗ When I arrived, the movie already started. ✓ When I arrived, the movie had already started.

✗ I was knowing the truth. ✓ I knew the truth.

✗ No sooner we had arrived than it started to rain. ✓ No sooner had we arrived than it started to rain.

✗ Having finished dinner, the dishes were washed. ✓ Having finished dinner, we washed the dishes.O sujeito da oração com particípio tem que ser o mesmo da oração principal.
