“Where is the station?” is correct, but “Could you tell me where the station is?” sounds much more polite. Indirect questions are essential at work, when travelling and in speaking exams, and they have one big trap for Brazilians: the word order changes back to normal.“Where is the station?” está correto, mas “Could you tell me where the station is?” soa muito mais educado.
B1+ From direct to indirect: wh- questions
An indirect question starts with an opening phrase like Can you tell me… or Do you know…. After the question word, we use statement word order: subject + verb. There is no inversion and no do / does / did.
| Direct question | Indirect question |
|---|---|
| Where is the bank? | Can you tell me where the bank is? |
| What time does the store open? | Do you know what time the store opens? |
| Why did she leave early? | Do you know why she left early? |
| How much is this jacket? | Could you tell me how much this jacket is? |
| When will the results come out? | Do you know when the results will come out? |
Notice what happens to do / does / did: it disappears, and the main verb takes the tense. Does the store open becomes the store opens, and did she leave becomes she left.Repare no que acontece com do / does / did: ele desaparece, e o verbo principal assume o tempo verbal. Does the store open vira the store opens, e did she leave vira she left.
- Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest pharmacy is? (Com licença, poderia me dizer onde fica a farmácia mais próxima?)
- Do you know what time the last bus to Campinas leaves?
- Can you tell me how long the flight takes? (Pode me dizer quanto tempo dura o voo?)
Teacher’s tip: why Brazilians get it wrong
In Portuguese the order rarely changes: “Onde fica o banco?” and “Sabe onde fica o banco?” keep the same order. In English, once you add the opening phrase, the question becomes a statement again: where the bank is.Em português a ordem quase não muda: “Onde fica o banco?” e “Sabe onde fica o banco?” mantêm a mesma ordem. Em inglês, quando você coloca a expressão de abertura, a pergunta volta a ser uma afirmação: where the bank is.
B1+ Yes/no questions: if and whether
When the direct question has no question word (a yes/no question), we use if or whether to introduce the indirect question. Whether is a little more formal.
- Do you know if the museum is open on Mondays?
- Could you tell me whether breakfast is included?
- I’d like to know if you have any rooms available for Friday.
- Can you check whether my order has arrived? (Você pode verificar se meu pedido chegou?)
if
Very common in conversation. It cannot come right before “or not” or before a to-infinitive.Muito comum na conversa. Não pode vir logo antes de “or not” nem antes de um infinitivo com to.
I don’t know if she’s coming. (Não sei se ela vem.)
whether
More formal. It works with “or not”, with a to-infinitive and after prepositions.Mais formal. Funciona com “or not”, com infinitivo com to e depois de preposições.
I can’t decide whether to stay or go. (Não consigo decidir se fico ou vou.)
B1+ Opening phrases and punctuation
Some opening phrases make a question, so the sentence ends with a question mark. Others make a statement, so the sentence ends with a full stop, even though we are asking for information.
| Opening phrase | Example | Português | Ends with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Could you tell me… | Could you tell me where the toilets are? | Poderia me dizer onde ficam os banheiros? | ? |
| Do you have any idea… | Do you have any idea how old he is? | ? |
| Would you mind telling me… | Would you mind telling me what you think? | ? |
| I wonder… | I wonder why she didn’t call. | . |
| I’d like to know… | I’d like to know how much it costs. | Gostaria de saber quanto custa. | . |
| I have no idea… | I have no idea where my keys are. | . |
Politeness
The longer the opening phrase, the more polite and tentative the question sounds. With a stranger, a customer or your boss, Could you tell me… or Would you mind telling me… is safer than a direct question. Com um desconhecido, um cliente ou seu chefe, Could you tell me… ou Would you mind telling me…
B1+ Special cases: be, modals and subject questions
With the verb be, the verb goes after the whole subject, often at the very end: What is the problem? becomes Can you tell me what the problem is? Modals and other auxiliaries also go after the subject. What is the problem? vira Can you tell me what the problem is?
- Do you know what the password for the Wi-Fi is? (Você sabe qual é a senha do Wi-Fi?)
- Could you tell me where I can buy a SIM card? (Poderia me dizer onde posso comprar um chip?)
- I wonder how long they have been married. (Fico me perguntando há quanto tempo eles são casados.)
Subject questions don’t change, because they already have statement word order: Who called? becomes Do you know who called? and What happened? becomes Can you tell me what happened? As perguntas de sujeito não mudam, porque já têm a ordem da frase afirmativa: Who called? vira Do you know who called? e What happened? vira Can you tell me what happened?
- Do you know who won the game last night? (Você sabe quem ganhou o jogo ontem à noite?)
- Nobody knows what caused the fire. (Ninguém sabe o que causou o incêndio.)
Indirect questions in exams
In speaking exams such as Cambridge B1 Preliminary and B2 First, indirect questions show range and politeness: I’m not sure whether I understood the question. Could you tell me what you mean by…?Em provas orais como o Cambridge B1 Preliminary e o B2 First, as perguntas indiretas mostram variedade e educação: I’m not sure whether I understood the question. Could you tell me what you mean by…?
