On Time vs In Time, At the End vs In the End

On Time x In TimePrepositionsA2

On time and in time look almost the same, and so do at the end and in the end. But a small preposition changes the meaning, and in Portuguese we often use the same words for both.On time e in time parecem quase iguais, assim como at the end e in the end.

A2 On time: at the planned time

On time means at the correct, planned time: not late. We use it for classes, flights, trains, meetings, payments and anything with a schedule. It is similar to “no horário” or “pontualmente”.On time significa no horário certo, combinado: sem atraso.

  • The class starts at 7:30. Please be on time. (A aula começa às 7h30. Por favor, cheguem no horário.)
  • Our flight to Recife left on time. (Nosso voo para Recife saiu no horário.)
  • Rafael is never on time. He’s always ten minutes late. (O Rafael nunca chega no horário. Ele sempre se atrasa dez minutos.)
  • I always pay my bills on time. (Eu sempre pago minhas contas em dia.)

The opposite of on time

The opposite of on time is late. We also say right on time or exactly on time to emphasize it.O contrário de on time é late (atrasado). Também dizemos right on time ou exactly on time para dar ênfase (bem na hora, pontualmente).

A2 In time: early enough

In time means early enough, before it is too late to do something. There is no fixed schedule; the idea is that you did not miss the moment. We often say in time for + noun or in time to + verb. Muitas vezes dizemos in time for + substantivo ou in time to + verbo.

in time+for + noun/to + verb
  • We got home in time for dinner. (Chegamos em casa a tempo do jantar.)
  • Will the package arrive in time for Christmas? (O pacote vai chegar a tempo do Natal?)
  • I arrived in time to say goodbye to Ana. (Cheguei a tempo de me despedir da Ana.)
  • The doctor came just in time. (O médico chegou bem na hora.)

Just in time means at the last possible moment. The opposite of in time is too late.Just in time significa no último momento possível, “bem na hora” ou “em cima da hora”. O contrário de in time é too late (tarde demais).

on time

At the planned time, not late.No horário combinado, sem atraso.

The bus left on time, at 8:00. (O ônibus saiu no horário, às 8h.)

in time

Early enough, not too late.Com tempo suficiente, não tarde demais.

We got to the stop in time to catch the bus.

A2 At the end vs in the end

At the end (of) refers to the final point of something: a month, a street, a film, a class. It is usually followed by of. In the end means “finally” or “after all”: it tells us the final result of a situation, often after problems or changes. It is not followed by of.At the end (of) se refere ao ponto final de algo: um mês, uma rua, um filme, uma aula. Normalmente vem seguido de of. In the end significa “no fim das contas” ou “afinal”: indica o resultado final de uma situação, muitas vezes depois de problemas ou mudanças. Não vem seguido de of.

ExpressionExamplePortuguês
at the end of + timeI get paid at the end of the month.Recebo no fim do mês.
at the end of + placeThe bakery is at the end of the street.A padaria fica no final da rua.
at the end of + eventEverybody cried at the end of the film.Todo mundo chorou no final do filme.
in the end = finallyWe argued a lot, but in the end we agreed.

  • Answer the questions at the end of the text. (Responda às perguntas no final do texto.)

A quick test

If you can replace the expression with finally or after all, use in the end. If you are talking about the last part of something, use at the end of.Se dá para trocar a expressão por finally (finalmente) ou after all (afinal), use in the end. Se você está falando da última parte de algo, use at the end of.

A2 At the beginning vs in the beginning

The same pattern works for the start. At the beginning of is the first part of something. In the beginning (or at first) means “at first, in the early period”, usually to show that the situation changed later.O mesmo padrão vale para o começo. At the beginning of é a primeira parte de algo. In the beginning (ou at first) significa “no começo, no início”, normalmente para mostrar que a situação mudou depois.

  • My birthday is at the beginning of May. (Meu aniversário é no começo de maio.)
  • In the beginning, I didn’t like my new school, but now I love it.
