Had Better and It’s Time

Had Better e It’s TimeModals, Imperative and Phrasal VerbsB1

Had better and it’s time help you give strong advice and say that something should happen now. They are short, very common in conversation and full of small traps for Brazilian learners, like the past form that talks about the present.Had better e it’s time ajudam você a dar conselhos firmes e a dizer que algo deveria acontecer agora. São expressões curtas, muito comuns na conversa e cheias de pequenas armadilhas para brasileiros, como a forma no passado que fala do presente.

B1 Had better: form and meaning

We use had better + base verb to give strong advice about a specific situation, now or in the near future. It often carries a warning: if you don’t do it, something bad will happen. Although had looks like a past form, the meaning is present or future.Usamos had better + verbo na forma base para dar um conselho forte sobre uma situação específica, agora ou num futuro próximo. Muitas vezes há um tom de aviso: se você não fizer isso, algo ruim vai acontecer. Embora had pareça passado, o sentido é de presente ou futuro.

Subject+had better (‘d better)+base verb
  • It’s going to rain. You’d better take an umbrella. (Vai chover. É melhor você levar um guarda-chuva.)
  • We’d better leave now, or we’ll miss the bus to São Paulo. (É melhor a gente sair agora, senão vamos perder o ônibus para São Paulo.)

The contraction ‘d

In speech and informal writing we almost always use the contraction: I’d better, you’d better, she’d better. In very fast speech the ‘d almost disappears (“you better go”), but in writing always keep it.Na fala e na escrita informal quase sempre usamos a contração: I’d better, you’d better, she’d better. Na fala bem rápida o ‘d quase some (“you better go”), mas na escrita mantenha sempre.

B1 Negatives, questions and had better vs should

The negative is had better not + base verb. The word not comes after better, never after had. Questions are rare and sound formal; we usually prefer Should I…? or Do you think I’d better…?A negativa é had better not + verbo na forma base. O not vem depois de better, nunca depois de had. Com seu chefe ou um cliente, prefira You might want to… ou It might be a good idea to…

B1 It’s time + to-infinitive

We use it’s time + to-infinitive to say that the right moment for something has arrived. It is neutral and does not criticize anyone. Past form, present meaning

After it’s time + subject, the verb is in the past simple, but we are talking about now. Do not use the present: ✗ It’s time you go. ✓ It’s time you went. This is the same “unreal past” we see in I wish you were here and I’d rather you stayed.Depois de it’s time + sujeito, o verbo fica no past simple, mas falamos do agora. Não use o presente: ✗ It’s time you go. ✓ It’s time you went. É o mesmo “passado irreal” de I wish you were here (Queria que você estivesse aqui) e I’d rather you stayed (Eu preferiria que você ficasse).
