Why do we say I know and not “I’m knowing”? Because some English verbs describe states, not actions, and they are not normally used in the continuous form. Understanding the difference between stative and dynamic verbs will make your English sound much more natural.Por que dizemos I know e não “I’m knowing”?
A2 Actions and states
Dynamic verbs describe actions: things that happen, start and finish, like run, eat, study, work. They can be used in the simple and in the continuous forms. Stative verbs describe states: thoughts, feelings, possession and senses, like know, love, have, need. They usually stay in the simple form, even when we talk about now. Verbos de estado (stative) descrevem estados: pensamentos, sentimentos, posse e sentidos, como know, love, have, need.
Dynamic verb
An action in progress can be continuous.

Teacher’s tip
A quick test: can you see the verb happening, like a scene in a film? Run, cook and dance are actions. You cannot “see” someone knowing, wanting or believing; those are states.
