Polite Conditionals: If You Don’t Mind

Condicionais de CortesiaConditionals and WishesB1–B2

Conditionals are not only for talking about possibilities. In everyday English, a small if makes requests, offers and opinions softer and more polite: If you could send me the file, that would be great. You will hear these phrases in shops, hotels, meetings and emails all the time. Learn them and your English will sound kind and natural, never bossy. No inglês do dia a dia, um pequeno if deixa pedidos, ofertas e opiniões mais suaves e educados: If you could send me the file, that would be great.

B1 Polite requests with if

A direct request like Send me the file can sound rude in English. Putting the request inside an if clause turns it into a gentle suggestion. The most common patterns use could after if and would in the other part. As estruturas mais comuns usam could depois do if e would na outra parte.

I’d appreciate it / It would be great+if you could+verb
  • If you could send me the file today, that would be great.
  • I’d appreciate it if you could reply by Friday.
  • It would be really helpful if you could bring your laptop.
  • I’d be grateful if you could check my essay.

Don’t forget “it”

✗ I’d appreciate if you could help me. ✓ I’d appreciate it if you could help me.Em português, dizemos “eu agradeceria se…”, sem nenhuma palavra no meio.

In shops, hotels and offices, staff often use only the if part, without finishing the sentence. It sounds polite and professional, and it is very common.

  • If you could just sign here, please. (Se puder assinar aqui, por favor.)
  • If you could fill in this form for me. (Se puder preencher este formulário para mim.)

B1 Offers and permission with if

A short if phrase also makes offers sound friendly and gives the other person the freedom to say no. After these phrases, use I can, I could, we could or an imperative like let me know. Depois dessas expressões, use I can, I could, we could ou um imperativo como let me know.

Teacher’s tip

Put if you don’t mind and if that’s OK at the end of the sentence. First say what you want to do, then add the polite part: I’ll sit here, if you don’t mind. It sounds softer than asking a full question.Coloque if you don’t mind e if that’s OK no fim da frase. I’ll sit here, if you don’t mind.

B2 If you would, if you will: the polite exception

You learned that we do not use will or would after if: If it rains, never if it will rain. There is one exception. When would or will means “be willing to”, it is a very polite way to ask someone to do something. It is common in formal situations, like at reception desks, in hospitals and in formal emails.Você aprendeu que não usamos will ou would depois de if: If it rains, nunca if it will rain.

Normal condition: no will

The if clause talks about something that may happen.

If it rains, we’ll stay inside. (Se chover, vamos ficar dentro de casa.)

Polite request: would / will is OK

The if clause asks the other person to do something.A oração com if pede que a outra pessoa faça algo.

  • If you would like to join us, please reply to this email.
  • If you would be so kind as to close the door.
  • If you’d like to come this way, your table is ready.

If you’d like, not if you will like

For offers, the polite form is if you’d like (if you would like). If you will like is never correct. In a casual conversation, if you like and if you want are also fine.Para ofertas, a forma educada é if you’d like (if you would like). If you will like nunca está correto. Numa conversa informal, if you like e if you want também funcionam.
