In English, a pronoun changes its form depending on its job in the sentence. Subject pronouns do the action and come before the verb. Object pronouns receive the action and come after the verb or after a preposition.Em inglês, o pronome muda de forma conforme a função na frase. Subject pronouns fazem a ação e vêm antes do verbo. Object pronouns recebem a ação e vêm depois do verbo ou depois de uma preposição.
A1 The two sets of pronouns

A1 Where each pronoun goes
Subject pronouns: before the verb
In Portuguese we often leave the subject out (“Estou cansada”, “Chove muito”), but in English every sentence needs one. For weather, time and distance, the subject is it.Em português muitas vezes deixamos o sujeito de fora (“Estou cansada”, “Chove muito”), mas em inglês toda frase precisa de um. Para clima, horas e distância, o sujeito é it.
- I like your dress. (Eu gosto do seu vestido.)
- It often rains here. (Chove muito aqui.)
- They come from London. (Eles são de Londres.)
- It’s ten o’clock. (São dez horas.)
Object pronouns: after the verb
In Portuguese, the object pronoun often comes before the verb (“Ela o ama”). In English, it always comes after: She loves him.Em português, o pronome objeto muitas vezes vem antes do verbo (“Ela o ama”). Em inglês, ele vem sempre depois: She loves him.
- Can you help me, please? (Você pode me ajudar, por favor?)
- I see her every Monday. (Eu a vejo toda segunda-feira.)
- She doesn’t like him. (Ela não gosta dele.)
- Tell us the truth! (Diga a verdade para nós!)
Object pronouns: after prepositions
After for, to, with, at, about, between and other prepositions, always use the object form.Depois de for, to, with, at, about, between e outras preposições, use sempre a forma objeto.
- She is always there for me. (Ela está sempre do meu lado.)
- Give it to him. (Dê isso para ele.)
- I want to speak to them. (Quero falar com eles.)
- Come with us! (Venha com a gente!)

He called me yesterday. (Ele me ligou ontem.)
Object

I called him yesterday. (Eu liguei para ele ontem.)
A1 I or me with another person?
The most common doubt appears when there are two people: Ana and I or Ana and me? The rule does not change: the subject takes I, the object takes me. To be polite, put the other person first.A dúvida mais comum aparece quando há duas pessoas: Ana and I ou Ana and me? A regra não muda: no sujeito, use I; no objeto, use me. Por educação, coloque a outra pessoa primeiro.
The quick test
Take the other person out of the sentence and see if it sounds right: “Ana and I went” → “I went” ✓ (“me went” ✗). “She invited Ana and me” → “She invited me” ✓.Tire a outra pessoa da frase e veja se soa certo: “Ana and I went” → “I went” ✓ (“me went” ✗). “She invited Ana and me” → “She invited me” ✓.

- She invited Ana and me to the party. (Ela convidou a Ana e a mim para a festa.)

Common mistakes
Avoid these
✗ Me and Ana went to the cinema. ✓ Ana and I went to the cinema.Sujeito: use I. Por educação, a outra pessoa vem primeiro.
✗ This is between you and I. ✓ This is between you and me.Depois de preposição (between): object pronoun.
✗ I’ll call to you tomorrow. ✓ I’ll call you tomorrow.Em português dizemos “ligar para alguém”, mas call (telefonar) não leva to: o pronome vem logo depois do verbo.
✗ I loved! ✓ I loved it!Em português, “Adorei!” basta; em inglês, love e like pedem o objeto: I loved it!
✗ Can you explain me the rule? ✓ Can you explain the rule to me?Explain não aceita o pronome logo depois: explain + coisa + to me.
✗ Is raining. ✓ It is raining.Toda frase precisa de sujeito.
