Too, Too Much, Too Many, Enough

Too e EnoughArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersA2

Too means “more than is good”, and enough means “the right amount”. Both translate as “muito” or “suficiente” in many contexts, which is why Brazilians often say “too beautiful” when they mean “very beautiful”. Let’s fix that for good.Too significa “mais do que deveria”, e enough significa “na medida certa”. Em muitos contextos os dois viram “muito” ou “suficiente” em português, e é por isso que os brasileiros costumam dizer “too beautiful” quando querem dizer “very beautiful”. Vamos resolver isso de vez.

A2 Too + adjective or adverb

We put too before an adjective or adverb to say that something is excessive and causes a problem. Very only makes the word stronger, with no problem implied.Colocamos too antes de um adjetivo ou advérbio para dizer que algo é excessivo e causa um problema. Very só intensifica a palavra, sem indicar problema.

too+adjective / adverb

very

Just “muito”. It can be positive or negative.Apenas “muito”. Pode ser positivo ou negativo.

This dress is very expensive, but I love it. (Este vestido é muito caro, mas eu adoro.)

too

“Muito” with a problem: “demais”, “caro demais para mim”.“Muito” com um problema: “demais”, “caro demais para mim”.

This dress is too expensive. I can’t buy it. (Este vestido é caro demais. Não posso comprar.)

  • The coffee is too hot. I’ll wait a minute. (O café está quente demais. Vou esperar um minuto.)
  • You’re driving too fast! Slow down. (Você está dirigindo rápido demais! Vai mais devagar.)
  • My little brother is too young to watch this film. (Meu irmão caçula é novo demais para assistir a esse filme.)

Teacher’s tip

Never use too to praise. You’re too kind is a fixed polite phrase, but Your house is too beautiful sounds strange: it suggests the beauty is a problem. Say very beautiful or really beautiful.Nunca use too para elogiar. You’re too kind é uma expressão fixa de educação, mas Your house is too beautiful soa estranho: dá a ideia de que a beleza é um problema. Diga very beautiful ou really beautiful.

A2 Too much and too many

Before a noun, too alone is not possible. Use too much with uncountable nouns and too many with plural countable nouns. It is the same logic as much and many.Antes de um substantivo, too sozinho não funciona. Use too much com substantivos incontáveis e too many com substantivos contáveis no plural. É a mesma lógica de much e many.

FormExamplePortuguês
too + adjectiveThe bag is too heavy.A mala está pesada demais.
too much + uncountableI drank too much coffee today.Tomei café demais hoje.
too many + plural nounThere are too many people on the bus.Tem gente demais no ônibus.
verb + too muchYou work too much.Você trabalha demais.
  • We have too much homework this week. (Temos lição de casa demais esta semana.)
  • I made too many mistakes in the test. (Cometi erros demais na prova.)
  • Don’t eat too much before you swim. (Não coma demais antes de nadar.)

Much too, way too

To make too + adjective stronger, put much or, informally, way BEFORE it: much too expensive, way too expensive. “Too much expensive” is wrong.Para reforçar too + adjetivo, coloque much ou, informalmente, way ANTES dele: much too expensive, way too expensive (caro demais da conta). “Too much expensive” está errado.

A2 Enough and not enough

Enough means “the necessary amount”. The position is the key point: it comes AFTER adjectives and adverbs, but BEFORE nouns.Enough significa “a quantidade necessária”. A posição é o ponto principal: ele vem DEPOIS de adjetivos e advérbios, mas ANTES de substantivos.

adjective / adverb+enough|enough+noun
  • Is the room big enough for ten people? (A sala é grande o suficiente para dez pessoas?)
  • She didn’t run fast enough to win the race. (Ela não correu rápido o bastante para ganhar a corrida.)
  • We don’t have enough chairs for everybody. (Não temos cadeiras suficientes para todo mundo.)
  • Do you have enough money for the ticket? (Você tem dinheiro suficiente para a passagem?)
  • Thanks, I’ve had enough. (Obrigada, já comi o bastante.)

The negative not … enough is often a polite way to avoid too: He isn’t tall enough sounds softer than He’s too short.A negativa not … enough muitas vezes é um jeito educado de evitar too: He isn’t tall enough (Ele não é alto o suficiente) soa mais suave que He’s too short (Ele é baixo demais).

  • The presentation wasn’t clear enough. (A apresentação não ficou clara o suficiente.)
  • I didn’t study enough for the vestibular mock test. (Não estudei o suficiente para o simulado do vestibular.)

A2 Too and enough + for + to-infinitive

After too and enough we often explain the result with to + verb. To say who is affected, add for + person before it. Do not use “for + verb”.Depois de too e enough, muitas vezes explicamos o resultado com to + verbo. Para dizer quem é afetado, acrescente for + pessoa antes. Não use “for + verbo”.

too / enough+(for + person)+to + base verb
ExamplePortuguês
It’s too cold to swim today.Está frio demais para nadar hoje.
The text is too difficult for the kids to read.O texto é difícil demais para as crianças lerem.
He’s old enough to drive.Ele tem idade suficiente para dirigir.

No “it” at the end

When the subject is also the object of the verb, do not repeat it: This box is too heavy to carry. Not “too heavy to carry it”.Quando o sujeito também é o objeto do verbo, não repita: This box is too heavy to carry. (Esta caixa é pesada demais para carregar.) E não “too heavy to carry it”.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ There were too much people. ✓ There were too many people.People é contável no plural, então pede too many.

✗ The film is too much long. ✓ The film is much too long.Antes de adjetivo, too vem sozinho; para reforçar, use much too.
