50 Combinações de Substantivo + PreposiçãoPrepositionsB2

Many English nouns come with a fixed preposition, and it is often not the one Portuguese would choose: we say the reason for, not “the reason of”, and an impact on, not “an impact in”. This post gives you 50 essential noun + preposition collocations, grouped by preposition, with real examples you can use in essays, exams and at work.Muitos substantivos em inglês vêm com uma preposição fixa, e muitas vezes não é a que o português escolheria: dizemos the reason for, e não “the reason of”, e an impact on, e não “an impact in”. Este post traz 50 combinações essenciais de substantivo + preposição, agrupadas por preposição, com exemplos reais para usar em redações, provas e no trabalho.

B2 How noun + preposition works

A collocation is a combination that native speakers simply use, so the best strategy is to learn the noun and its preposition as one block: interest in, lack of, access to. After the preposition comes a noun, a pronoun or a verb in -ing, never the infinitive.Uma collocation é uma combinação que os falantes nativos simplesmente usam, então a melhor estratégia é aprender o substantivo e sua preposição como um bloco só: interest in, lack of, access to. Depois da preposição vem um substantivo, um pronome ou um verbo com -ing, nunca o infinitivo.

Teacher’s tip: look at the verb or adjective

Often the noun keeps the preposition of the related verb or adjective: interested in → interest in, responsible for → responsibility for, afraid of → fear of. But not always: to depend on → dependence on, while to discuss (no preposition) → a discussion about.Muitas vezes o substantivo mantém a preposição do verbo ou adjetivo relacionado: interested in → interest in, responsible for → responsibility for, afraid of → fear of.
