Gonna, Wanna, Gotta: Informal Spoken English

Gonna, Wanna, Gotta: Formas Reduzidas do Inglês FaladoSlang, Idioms and AbbreviationsB1–B2

In songs, series and real conversations, native speakers rarely say “I am going to” or “I want to”. They say I’m gonna and I wanna. These short spoken forms join two or three words into one. Understanding them is essential for listening, and knowing when (not) to write them keeps your English natural and correct.Em músicas, séries e conversas de verdade, os nativos raramente dizem “I am going to” ou “I want to”. Eles dizem I’m gonna e I wanna. Essas formas curtas da fala juntam duas ou três palavras em uma. Entendê-las é essencial para o listening, e saber quando (não) escrevê-las deixa o seu inglês natural e correto.

B1 The forms you hear every day

These are the most common reduced forms. They are not slang words with a new meaning: they are simply the way people pronounce the full words when they speak fast.Estas são as formas reduzidas mais comuns. Não são gírias com um sentido novo: são simplesmente o jeito como as pessoas pronunciam as palavras completas quando falam rápido.

lemmeLemme see your photos.Let me see your photos.Deixa eu ver suas fotos.
’cause / cuzI stayed home ’cause it was raining.I stayed home because it was raining.Fiquei em casa porque estava chovendo.

Gonna only before a verb

Gonna replaces going to only when a verb comes next (future plans). When going to means movement to a place, it does not change: I’m gonna travel, but I’m going to the beach.Gonna substitui going to só quando vem um verbo depois (planos para o futuro). Quando going to significa ir a um lugar, ele não muda: I’m gonna travel (vou viajar), mas I’m going to the beach (estou indo para a praia).

B2 More reduced forms and when to use them

At B2 you will meet more reduced forms in films, lyrics and messages. Some of them are also common in writing between friends, but none of them belong in formal texts. No nível B2 você vai encontrar mais formas reduzidas em filmes, letras de música e mensagens. Algumas também são comuns na escrita entre amigos, mas nenhuma delas cabe em textos formais.

What about “ain’t”?

Ain’t can mean am not, isn’t, aren’t, hasn’t or haven’t: I ain’t got time. You will hear it a lot in songs and films, but it is considered nonstandard (outside the grammar of the standard language). Understand it, but don’t use it in tests, essays or at work.Ain’t pode significar am not, isn’t, aren’t, hasn’t ou haven’t: I ain’t got time. (Não tenho tempo.) Você vai ouvir muito em músicas e filmes, mas é considerado fora da norma padrão. Entenda, mas não use em provas, redações ou no trabalho.

Two rules for wanna and should’ve

wanna: only “want to” together

When a person comes between want and to, there is no wanna.Quando uma pessoa aparece entre want e to, não existe wanna.

I want you to come. (Quero que você venha.) Never “I wanna you come”.

should’ve, not “should of”

Should’ve sounds like “should of”, but the correct written form is should’ve or should have.Should’ve soa como “should of”, mas a forma escrita correta é should’ve ou should have.

I should’ve studied more. (Eu devia ter estudado mais.)

When is it OK to use them?

✗ I wanna you help me. ✓ I want you to help me.Com uma pessoa no meio, não existe wanna.

✗ I should of called you. ✓ I should’ve called you.A forma escrita é should’ve ou should have.

✗ Dear Sir, I wanna apply for the job. ✓ Dear Sir, I would like to apply for the job.Em textos formais, nada de formas reduzidas.
