Homophones

HomófonosVocabulary, Spelling and PronunciationA2–B2

Homophones are words that sound exactly the same but have different spellings and meanings: there, their and they’re, or write and right. When you listen, the context tells you which word it is. When you write, you need to choose the right spelling, and even native speakers get these wrong. In this post you will learn the most common homophones, from everyday pairs to the tricky ones that appear in essays and exams.Homófonos são palavras que têm exatamente o mesmo som, mas grafias e significados diferentes: there, their e they’re, ou write e right. Quando você ouve, o contexto mostra qual é a palavra. Quando você escreve, precisa escolher a grafia certa, e até os nativos erram. Neste post, você vai aprender os homófonos mais comuns, desde os pares do dia a dia até os mais traiçoeiros, que aparecem em redações e provas.

A2 The homophones everyone needs

There, their, they’re and to, too, two

These two groups are the most famous homophones in English. Each group has one sound and three spellings, and each spelling has a completely different job in the sentence.Estes dois grupos são os homófonos mais famosos do inglês. Your, you’re, its, it’s, whose, who’s

In these pairs, one word shows possession and the other is a short form with an apostrophe. The apostrophe always means that a letter is missing: you’re = you are, it’s = it is or it has, who’s = who is or who has.Nestes pares, uma palavra indica posse e a outra é uma forma contraída com apóstrofo. O apóstrofo sempre mostra que falta uma letra: you’re = you are, it’s = it is ou it has, who’s = who is ou who has.

The apostrophe test

If not, use the word without it: The cat hurt it is leg makes no sense, so the answer is its leg.Ficou na dúvida? Diga a forma longa. Se it is, you are ou they are fizer sentido na frase, use o apóstrofo. Se não fizer, use a palavra sem ele: The cat hurt it is leg não faz sentido, então a resposta é its leg.

Your accent can change the list

Some words are homophones only in some accents. When you hear them, use the context, just as native speakers do.Algumas palavras são homófonas só em alguns sotaques. Quando ouvir essas palavras, use o contexto, como os nativos fazem.

Many American speakers

For many Americans, Mary, marry and merry sound the same, and so do writer and rider in fast speech.Para muitos americanos, Mary, marry e merry têm o mesmo som, assim como writer e rider na fala rápida.

Merry Christmas, Mary! (Feliz Natal, Mary!)

Many British speakers

In standard southern British English, the R at the end of a syllable is not pronounced, so sauce and source sound the same, and so do caught and court. No inglês britânico padrão do sul da Inglaterra, o R no fim da sílaba não é pronunciado, então sauce e source têm o mesmo som, assim como caught e court.

He was caught near the court. (Ele foi pego perto do tribunal.)

Homophones and homographs

Homophones have the same sound and different spellings. Homographs are the opposite: the same spelling, but a different sound or meaning, like read (present, “rííd”) and read (past, “réd”), or live (verb, “lív”) and live (adjective, “láiv”).Os homófonos têm o mesmo som e grafias diferentes. Os homógrafos são o contrário: a mesma grafia, mas som ou significado diferente, como read (presente, “rííd”) e read (passado, “réd”), ou live (verbo, “lív”) e live (adjetivo, “láiv”).

Teacher’s tip

Your phone’s spell checker will not save you here, because their and there are both real words. Before you send an important email or hand in an essay, read it once looking only for homophones. With time, the right spelling becomes automatic.O corretor do seu celular não vai salvar você aqui, porque their e there são palavras que existem. Antes de enviar um e-mail importante ou entregar uma redação, leia o texto uma vez procurando só os homófonos. Com o tempo, a grafia certa fica automática.
