To talk about the past, you need more than the verb: you need to say when. Words like yesterday, last week and two years ago are short, but Brazilian students often translate them word for word and say things like “in the last week” or “before two years”. Here you learn how to use them the natural way.Para falar do passado, você precisa de mais do que o verbo: precisa dizer quando. Palavras como yesterday, last week e two years ago são curtas, mas muitos alunos brasileiros traduzem ao pé da letra e dizem coisas como “in the last week” ou “before two years”. Aqui você aprende a usá-las do jeito natural.
A1 Yesterday and last
Use yesterday for the day before today, and last for the most recent week, month, year, weekend or day of the week. With last, don’t use “the”, “in” or “on”.Use yesterday para o dia antes de hoje, e last para a semana, o mês, o ano, o fim de semana ou o dia da semana mais recente. Com last, não use “the”, “in” nem “on”.
- I didn’t sleep well last night. (Não dormi bem ontem à noite.)
- We visited my grandparents last weekend. (Visitamos meus avós no fim de semana passado.)
- She started her new job last month. (Ela começou no emprego novo no mês passado.)
- I called you yesterday afternoon, but you didn’t answer. (Te liguei ontem à tarde, mas você não atendeu.)
No “in”, no “the”
Say last week, not “in the last week”. The last week exists, but it means “the past seven days until now”: I’ve been very busy for the last week.Diga last week, e não “in the last week”. The last week existe, mas significa “os últimos sete dias até agora”: I’ve been very busy for the last week. (Estive muito ocupado nos últimos sete dias.)
A1 Ago: há… atrás
Ago means “há” or “atrás” when you count back from now. It always comes after the period of time, never before it.Ago significa “há” ou “atrás” quando você conta para trás a partir de agora. Ele sempre vem depois do período de tempo, nunca antes.
- I moved to Belo Horizonte three years ago. (Eu me mudei para Belo Horizonte há três anos.)
- The movie started ten minutes ago. (O filme começou há dez minutos.)
- We met a long time ago. (A gente se conheceu há muito tempo.)
- How long ago did you finish school? (Há quanto tempo você terminou a escola?)
Teacher’s tip
Think of the Portuguese word “atrás”: dois anos atrás = two years ago. The order is the same! Never translate “há dois anos” as “before two years” or “has two years”.Pense na palavra “atrás”: dois anos atrás = two years ago. A ordem é a mesma! Nunca traduza “há dois anos” como “before two years” nem “has two years”.
In, on and at with past dates
When you say the exact date or time, use the same prepositions as always: in for years and months, on for days and dates, at for clock times.Quando você diz a data ou o horário exato, use as preposições de sempre: in para anos e meses, on para dias e datas, at para horários.
| Preposition | Example | Português |

| at + clock time | The bus left at 7:30. | O ônibus saiu às 7h30. |
| no preposition | I saw her yesterday / last Friday. | Eu a vi ontem / na sexta passada. |
A2 Ago, for and before
These three words are easy to mix up. Ago tells you when something happened, counting back from now. For tells you how long it lasted. Before means earlier than another moment.Essas três palavras confundem fácil. Ago diz quando algo aconteceu, contando para trás a partir de agora. For diz quanto tempo durou. Before significa antes de outro momento.
ago: when?
A point in the past.Um ponto no passado.
