Pronouns replace nouns so we don’t repeat the same words all the time. In English there are only a few of them, and they don’t agree with the gender of the thing someone owns, as they do in Portuguese (meu, minha). Start with the full table, then see how to use each group.Os pronomes substituem nomes para não repetirmos as mesmas palavras o tempo todo. Em inglês eles são poucos e não concordam com o gênero da coisa possuída, como acontece em português (meu, minha). Comece pela tabela geral e depois veja como usar cada grupo.
A1 All pronouns at a glance
English pronouns come in five groups. Read the table across: each row is one person, and each column is a different job in the sentence. Some forms look the same in two columns (you, her, his, it).Os pronomes em inglês se dividem em cinco grupos. Leia a tabela na horizontal: cada linha é uma pessoa, e cada coluna é uma função diferente na frase. Algumas formas se repetem em duas colunas (you, her, his, it).

A2 Possessives, reflexives and the phone
Possessive adjectives versus possessive pronouns
Both show who owns something. The difference is the position: the possessive adjective needs a noun after it; the possessive pronoun replaces the noun and stands alone.Os dois mostram de quem é alguma coisa. A diferença é a posição: o adjetivo possessivo precisa de um substantivo depois; o pronome possessivo substitui o substantivo e fica sozinho.
Possessive adjective
It comes before a noun.Vem antes de um substantivo.
This is my car. (Este é o meu carro.)
Their house is big. (A casa deles é grande.)
Possessive pronoun
It replaces the noun and stands alone.Substitui o substantivo: fica sozinho.
This car is mine. (Este carro é meu.)
The big house is theirs. (A casa grande é deles.)
- Is this your phone? No, it’s not mine. It’s hers. (Este celular é seu? Não, não é meu. É dela.)
- Our teacher is great. Yours is great too. (Nossa professora é ótima. A sua também é.)
- Whose jacket is this? It’s his. (De quem é esta jaqueta? É dele.)
- Their house is bigger than ours. (A casa deles é maior que a nossa.)
His and her: the owner decides, not the thing
In Portuguese, “seu/sua” agrees with the thing owned. In English, his and her agree with the owner: Maria and her brother, João and his sister.Em português, “seu/sua” concorda com a coisa possuída. Em inglês, his e her concordam com o dono: Maria and her brother (Maria e o irmão dela), João and his sister (João e a irmã dele).
Its or it’s?
Its is possessive: The dog wagged its tail. Its é possessivo: The dog wagged its tail. (O cachorro abanou o rabo.)
It’s is the short form of it is or it has: It’s late. It’s é a contração de it is ou it has: It’s late. (Está tarde.)
Reflexive pronouns
We use them when the person who does the action also receives it, or for emphasis (“eu mesmo”). With by, they mean “alone”.Usamos quando quem faz a ação também a recebe, ou para dar ênfase (“eu mesmo”). Com by, significam “sozinho”.
- I cut myself. (Eu me cortei.)
- She taught herself to play the guitar. (Ela aprendeu a tocar violão sozinha.)
- We did it ourselves. (Nós mesmos fizemos isso.)
- He lives by himself. (Ele mora sozinho.)
- Enjoy yourselves! (Divirtam-se!)
- Did you hurt yourself? (Você se machucou?)
Singular and plural
Yourself is for one person and yourselves for more than one: in the plural, -self becomes -selves.Yourself (você mesmo) é para uma pessoa e yourselves (vocês mesmos), para mais de uma: no plural, -self vira -selves.
On the phone
This is Fernanda
To introduce yourself on the phone, say “Hello, this is Fernanda.”, not “I am Fernanda”. To ask who is speaking: “Who’s calling?” or “Who’s this?”.Para se apresentar ao telefone, dizemos “Hello, this is Fernanda.” (Alô, aqui é a Fernanda.), e não “I am Fernanda”. Para perguntar quem está falando: “Who’s calling?” ou “Who’s this?”.

Avoid these

✗ This book is your. ✓ This book is yours.Sem substantivo depois, use o pronome possessivo.
✗ The dog wagged it’s tail. ✓ The dog wagged its tail. It’s = it is; o possessivo é its.
✗ She said me the answer. ✓ She told me the answer.Say não aceita a pessoa logo depois do verbo; com a pessoa, use tell: told me.
