Present Simple

Presente SimplesPresent TensesA1

The Present Simple is the tense of routines, habits and facts: what you do every day, what you like and what is always true. It looks easy, but the little -s of he, she and it and the auxiliaries do and does cause many mistakes. This lesson shows you every step, with real examples from school, work and family life.O Present Simple é o tempo das rotinas, dos hábitos e dos fatos: o que você faz todo dia, do que você gosta e o que é sempre verdade. Parece fácil, mas o pequeno -s de he, she e it e os auxiliares do e does causam muitos erros. Esta lição mostra cada passo, com exemplos reais da escola, do trabalho e da família.

A1 Affirmative and the third person -s

In the affirmative, the verb stays in its base form for I, you, we and they. With he, she and it, we add -s or -es to the verb. This is the only change in the whole affirmative.Na afirmativa, o verbo fica na forma básica com I, you, we e they. Com he, she e it, acrescentamos -s ou -es ao verbo. Essa é a única mudança em toda a afirmativa.

he / she / it+verb + s / es+complement
  • I work at a bank in Campinas. (Eu trabalho num banco em Campinas.)
  • My mother works at a school. (Minha mãe trabalha numa escola.)
  • We play volleyball on Saturdays. (Nós jogamos vôlei aos sábados.)
  • The bus leaves at 6:30. (O ônibus sai às 6h30.)

Spelling rules for -s

Most verbs just take -s. Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -x and -o take -es. Verbs ending in consonant + y change y to -ies. The verb have is irregular: has.A maioria dos verbos só recebe -s. Verbos terminados em -ch, -sh, -ss, -x e -o recebem -es. Verbos terminados em consoante + y trocam o y por -ies. O verbo have é irregular: has.

RuleExamplePortuguês
most verbs: + sread → reads, live → liveslê, mora
-ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o: + eswatch → watches, go → goesassiste, vai
consonant + y: y → iesstudy → studies, fly → fliesestuda, voa
vowel + y: + splay → plays, buy → buysjoga, compra
irregularhave → hastem

Teacher’s tip

Think of the -s as a small flag for he, she and it. Before you speak, ask yourself: “Is the subject one person or one thing that is not me or you?” If the answer is yes, the verb needs the flag.Pense no -s como uma bandeirinha de he, she e it. Antes de falar, pergunte a si mesmo: “O sujeito é uma pessoa ou uma coisa que não sou eu nem você?” Se a resposta for sim, o verbo precisa da bandeirinha.

A1 Negative: don’t and doesn’t

For negatives we need an auxiliary: don’t (do not) with I, you, we, they and doesn’t (does not) with he, she, it. After doesn’t, the main verb goes back to the base form, because the -s is already in “does”.Na negativa precisamos de um auxiliar: don’t (do not) com I, you, we, they e doesn’t (does not) com he, she, it. Depois de doesn’t, o verbo principal volta à forma básica, porque o -s já está em “does”.

Subject+don’t / doesn’t+base verb
  • I don’t eat meat. (Eu não como carne.)
  • My father doesn’t drink coffee. (Meu pai não toma café.)
  • They don’t live near the school. (Eles não moram perto da escola.)

Wrong

The -s appears twice: in does and in the verb.O -s aparece duas vezes: em does e no verbo.

She doesn’t likes pizza. (errado)

Right

The -s appears only once, in doesn’t.O -s aparece só uma vez, em doesn’t.

She doesn’t like pizza. (Ela não gosta de pizza.)

A1 Questions and short answers

Questions start with Do or Does, then the subject, then the base verb. Short answers use do/does again, never the main verb.As perguntas começam com Do ou Does, depois vem o sujeito e o verbo na forma básica. As respostas curtas usam do/does de novo, nunca o verbo principal.

Do / Does+subject+base verb?
QuestionPortuguêsShort answer
Do you speak Spanish?Você fala espanhol?Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
Does he live in Rio?Ele mora no Rio?Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.
Do they have lunch at school?Eles almoçam na escola?Yes, they do. / No, they don’t.
Does it rain a lot in Manaus?Chove muito em Manaus?Yes, it does. / No, it doesn’t.

Wh- questions follow the same order, with the question word at the start: question word + do/does + subject + verb.As perguntas com wh- seguem a mesma ordem, com a palavra interrogativa no início: palavra interrogativa + do/does + sujeito + verbo.

  • Where do you work? (Onde você trabalha?)
  • What time does the class start? (Que horas a aula começa?)
  • How do you go to school? (Como você vai para a escola?)

Do as a main verb

Do can also be the main verb, meaning “fazer”. That is why you see it twice in questions like What do you do? (O que você faz? / Qual é a sua profissão?).Do também pode ser o verbo principal, com o sentido de “fazer”. Por isso ele aparece duas vezes em perguntas como What do you do? (O que você faz? / Qual é a sua profissão?).

A1 Uses and frequency adverbs

We use the Present Simple for routines and habits, for facts and general truths, for likes and dislikes, and for timetables. It does not describe an action happening at this moment: for that we use the Present Continuous.Usamos o Present Simple para rotinas e hábitos, fatos e verdades gerais, gostos e preferências, e horários fixos. Ele não descreve uma ação acontecendo neste momento: para isso usamos o Present Continuous.

  • Julia loves Japanese food. (A Julia adora comida japonesa.)
  • I usually have breakfast at seven. (Eu geralmente tomo café da manhã às sete.)
  • He never studies on Sundays. (Ele nunca estuda aos domingos.)

Where frequency adverbs go

Adverbs like always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely and never go before the main verb but after the verb to be: She always walks to work. / She is always late.Advérbios como always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely e never vêm antes do verbo principal, mas depois do verbo to be: She always walks to work. / She is always late.

AdverbExamplePortuguês
always (100%)I always brush my teeth.Eu sempre escovo os dentes.
