The Passive in All Tenses

A Voz Passiva em Todos os TemposThe PassiveB1–B1+

The passive voice puts the focus on the action or on who receives it, not on who does it. It is everywhere in news, science, instructions and vestibular texts, and the good news is that it follows one simple rule in every tense: be + past participle.A voz passiva coloca o foco na ação ou em quem a recebe, e não em quem a pratica. Ela está em toda parte: notícias, ciência, instruções e textos de vestibular. A boa notícia é que segue uma regra simples em todos os tempos: be + particípio.

B1 Form and use

To make the passive, take the object of the active sentence and make it the subject. Then use the verb be in the same tense as the active verb, plus the past participle of the main verb. The tense is shown only by be; the participle never changes.Para formar a passiva, pegue o objeto da frase ativa e transforme-o em sujeito. Depois use o verbo be no mesmo tempo do verbo ativo, mais o particípio do verbo principal. Quem mostra o tempo é só o be; o particípio nunca muda.

Object becomes subject+be (in the right tense)+past participle+(by + agent)

Active

The focus is on who does the action.O foco está em quem pratica a ação.

Oscar Niemeyer designed the Brasília Cathedral. (Oscar Niemeyer projetou a Catedral de Brasília.)

Passive

The focus is on what receives the action.O foco está no que recebe a ação.

The Brasília Cathedral was designed by Oscar Niemeyer. (A Catedral de Brasília foi projetada por Oscar Niemeyer.)

When do we use the passive?

We use the passive when the person who does the action is unknown, obvious or unimportant, or when we want to focus on the result. We add by + agent only when that information is new or important.Usamos a passiva quando quem pratica a ação é desconhecido, óbvio ou sem importância, ou quando queremos destacar o resultado. Acrescentamos by + agente só quando essa informação é nova ou importante.

Negatives and questions

The auxiliary be (or the first auxiliary) does the work. Put not after it, or move it before the subject: The emails weren’t sent. Was the package delivered? Has the problem been solved?Quem trabalha é o auxiliar be (ou o primeiro auxiliar). Coloque not depois dele, ou passe-o para antes do sujeito: Os e-mails não foram enviados. O pacote foi entregue? O problema já foi resolvido?

Teacher’s tip: the Portuguese “se”

Many Portuguese sentences with “se” become passives in English. “Aluga-se apartamento” is Apartment for rent or An apartment is being rented; “Fala-se inglês” is English is spoken. Don’t translate the “se” word for word.Muitas frases em português com “se” viram passiva em inglês. “Aluga-se apartamento” é Apartment for rent ou An apartment is being rented; “Fala-se inglês” é English is spoken. Não traduza o “se” palavra por palavra.

B1+ Modals, infinitives and two objects

At B1+ you use the passive with modal verbs, after other verbs, and with verbs that have two objects. The rule is the same: put be in the form the structure needs and add the past participle. No B1+ você usa a passiva com verbos modais, depois de outros verbos e com verbos que têm dois objetos. A regra é a mesma: coloque o be na forma que a estrutura pede e acrescente o particípio.

Modal passives

StructureExamplePortuguês
modal + be + ppPhones must be switched off during the test.Os celulares devem ser desligados durante a prova.
modal + be + ppThis problem can be solved easily.Esse problema pode ser resolvido facilmente.
modal + have been + ppThe accident could have been avoided.O acidente poderia ter sido evitado.
modal + have been + ppThe form should have been signed.O formulário deveria ter sido assinado.

Passive infinitive and gerund

After verbs followed by to, use to be + pp. After prepositions and verbs followed by -ing, use being + pp.Depois de verbos seguidos de to, use to be + particípio. Depois de preposições e de verbos seguidos de -ing, use being + particípio.

  • I don’t want to be disturbed while I’m studying. (Não quero ser incomodado enquanto estudo.)

  • Nobody likes being criticised in public. (Ninguém gosta de ser criticado em público.)
  • She left without being seen. (Ela saiu sem ser vista.)

Verbs with two objects

Verbs like give, send, offer, show, tell and teach have two objects, so there are two possible passives. Starting with the person is more common and natural in English. This structure does not exist in Portuguese, so “Eu recebi uma bolsa” becomes I was given a scholarship.Verbos como give, send, offer, show, tell e teach têm dois objetos, então há duas passivas possíveis. Começar pela pessoa é mais comum e natural em inglês. Essa estrutura não existe em português, então “Eu recebi uma bolsa” vira I was given a scholarship.

  • We were told to wait outside. (Disseram para a gente esperar lá fora.)
  • A prize was given to the best student. (Um prêmio foi dado ao melhor aluno.)

The get passive

In informal English, get can replace be, especially for unexpected or unpleasant events: get hurt, get stolen, get fired, get married. No inglês informal, get pode substituir be, principalmente para acontecimentos inesperados ou desagradáveis: get hurt, get stolen, get fired, get married.

  • My phone got stolen on the metro. (Roubaram meu celular no metrô.)
  • Thiago got hurt playing football. (O Thiago se machucou jogando futebol.)

Verbs with no passive

Only verbs with an object can be passive. Intransitive verbs like happen, arrive, die, occur, disappear and be born (already passive in form) cannot change. Brazilians often say “The accident was happened”, but it is wrong: say The accident happened.Só verbos com objeto podem ir para a passiva. Verbos intransitivos como happen, arrive, die, occur, disappear e be born (que já tem forma passiva) não mudam. Os brasileiros às vezes dizem “The accident was happened”, mas está errado: o certo é The accident happened.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ The house was build in 1950. ✓ The house was built in 1950.Na passiva usamos o particípio, não o verbo na forma base.

✗ The accident was happened at night. ✓ The accident happened at night.Happen é intransitivo e não tem passiva.

✗ The road is repairing. ✓ The road is being repaired. No present continuous passivo, precisamos de being.

✗ I was born on 1998. ✓ I was born in 1998.Com ano, a preposição é in; e lembre: “nasci” é sempre was born.

✗ It must be finish today. ✓ It must be finished today.Depois de modal + be, use o particípio.
