Have To, Must, Should: Obligation and Advice

Obrigação e ConselhoModals, Imperative and Phrasal VerbsA2–B2

In Portuguese, “ter que”, “precisar” and “dever” cover a lot of ground. English splits these ideas into have to, must, should, need to, be supposed to and be allowed to, and each one says something slightly different about who decides and how strong the rule is.Em português, “ter que”, “precisar” e “dever” cobrem muita coisa. O inglês divide essas ideias em have to, must, should, need to, be supposed to e be allowed to, e cada um diz algo um pouco diferente sobre quem decide e o quanto a regra é forte.

A2 Have to, must and should: the basics

Three structures cover most everyday situations: have to and must for obligation, and should for advice. Must and should are modal verbs (no -s, no do). Have to is a normal verb, so it changes: has to, doesn’t have to, Do you have to…?Três estruturas resolvem a maioria das situações do dia a dia: have to e must para obrigação, e should para conselho. Must e should são verbos modais (sem -s, sem do). Have to é um verbo comum, então ele muda: has to, doesn’t have to, Do you have to…?
