Adjective Order

Ordem dos AdjetivosAdjectives and AdverbsB1+

In English, adjectives come before the noun. When we use two or more, they normally follow a set order. Changing the order doesn’t stop communication, but it sounds strange to a native speaker: strong black Italian coffee sounds natural; Italian black strong coffee doesn’t.Em inglês, os adjetivos vêm antes do substantivo. Quando usamos dois ou mais, eles normalmente seguem uma ordem definida. Trocar a ordem não impede a comunicação, mas soa estranho para um nativo: strong black Italian coffee soa natural; Italian black strong coffee, não.

B1+ Two simple rules

Before memorising the full list, learn these two practical rules. They solve almost every case you will meet in real life.Antes de decorar a lista completa, aprenda estas duas regras práticas. Elas resolvem quase todos os casos que você vai encontrar na vida real.

Rule 1: opinion before fact

Opinion adjectives (nice, beautiful, delicious, ugly, interesting) come before fact adjectives (big, old, green, French, wooden).Adjetivos de opinião (nice, beautiful, delicious, ugly, interesting) vêm antes de adjetivos de fato (big, old, green, French, wooden).

  • They live in a beautiful old house. (Eles moram em uma bela casa antiga.)
  • We had some delicious Korean food. (Comemos uma comida coreana deliciosa.)
  • Why are you wearing those ugly purple trousers? (Por que você está usando essa calça roxa feia?)
  • We stayed at a lovely little hotel by the sea. (Ficamos num hotelzinho encantador à beira-mar.)

Rule 2: general before specific

Adjectives with a broad meaning (small, old, hot, long) come before more specific ones (green, French, wooden, striped).Adjetivos de sentido amplo (small, old, hot, long) vêm antes dos mais específicos (green, French, wooden, striped).

  • He works for a small Canadian company. (Ele trabalha para uma pequena empresa canadense.)
  • We bought a new leather sofa. (Compramos um sofá de couro novo.)
  • I need a really warm woolly hat. (Preciso de um gorro de lã bem quentinho.)
  • My grandfather has a long white beard. (Meu avô tem uma barba branca comprida.)

Opinion

What you think: someone else may disagree.O que você acha: outra pessoa pode discordar.

a lovely dress (um vestido lindo)

Fact

What anyone can see or check.O que qualquer um pode ver ou confirmar.

a red silk dress (um vestido vermelho de seda)

B1+ The complete order

When you need more detail, this is the full sequence. The noun always closes the group, and purpose comes right before it.Quando você precisar de mais detalhes, esta é a sequência completa. O substantivo sempre fecha o grupo, e a finalidade vem logo antes dele.

Opinion+Size+Shape / Quality+Age+Colour+Origin+Material+Purpose+Noun

6OriginBrazilian, Italian, Japaneseorigem, nacionalidade

Memorise the sequence

Opinion, Size, Shape, Age, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose. In the acronym OSASCOMP, very popular in language courses, age comes before shape; some grammar books put shape before age. You will see both orders; the rest of the sequence doesn’t change.Opinion, Size, Shape, Age, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose. Na sigla OSASCOMP, muito usada em cursos, age vem antes de shape; algumas gramáticas colocam shape antes de age. As duas ordens aparecem; o resto da sequência não muda.

See the order in action

  • a big round wooden table (uma mesa grande e redonda de madeira)

Look at the translation

In Portuguese, most adjectives come after the noun and the order is freer. That’s why the translation rarely follows the same sequence as the English.Em português, a maioria dos adjetivos vem depois do substantivo e a ordem é mais livre. Por isso, a tradução raramente segue a mesma sequência do inglês.

B1+ Commas and the word and

Punctuation depends on the type of adjectives and on their position in the sentence.A pontuação depende do tipo de adjetivo e da posição dele na frase.

  • Adjectives from different categories (opinion + age + colour) usually take no comma: a beautiful old red car.Adjetivos de categorias diferentes (opinião + idade + cor) normalmente não levam vírgula: a beautiful old red car.
  • Two adjectives from the same category can take a comma or and: a warm, friendly person; a black and white cat.Dois adjetivos da mesma categoria podem levar vírgula ou and: a warm, friendly person; a black and white cat.
  • After the verb (be, look, seem), we normally use and before the last one: The house is big, old and beautiful.Depois do verbo (be, look, seem), normalmente usamos and antes do último: The house is big, old and beautiful.
  • Never put a comma between the last adjective and the noun: a warm, friendly person (not a warm, friendly, person).Nunca coloque vírgula entre o último adjetivo e o substantivo: a warm, friendly person (e não a warm, friendly, person).
  • She drives a beautiful old red car. (Ela dirige um lindo carro vermelho antigo.)
  • Our new neighbour is a warm, friendly person. (Nossa vizinha nova é uma pessoa calorosa e simpática.)
  • The hotel was clean, quiet and cheap. (O hotel era limpo, tranquilo e barato.)
  • She gave me a clear, helpful answer. (Ela me deu uma resposta clara e útil.)

In practice

We rarely use more than two or three adjectives together. If the sentence gets too long, split it: She bought a silk scarf. It’s long and beautiful.Raramente usamos mais de dois ou três adjetivos juntos. Se a frase ficar longa demais, divida: She bought a silk scarf. It’s long and beautiful. (Ela comprou uma echarpe de seda. É longa e linda.)
