Past Perfect vs. Past Perfect Continuous

Past TensesA2–B1

Both tenses talk about something that happened before another moment in the past. The difference is the focus: the past perfect highlights the result (what was already done); the past perfect continuous highlights the duration or the process (what had been going on).Os dois tempos falam de algo que aconteceu antes de outro momento do passado.

Past Perfect

had + past participle. The focus is on the result.had + particípio passado. O foco está no resultado.

When I arrived, she had cooked dinner. (Quando cheguei, ela tinha feito o jantar. O jantar estava pronto.)

Past Perfect Continuous

had been + verb-ing. The focus is on the process.had been + verbo com -ing. O foco está no processo.

When I arrived, she had been cooking for hours. (Quando cheguei, ela estava cozinhando havia horas.)

A2 Past Perfect

Use the past perfect to go one step further back in the past. It is the same had for every person (I, you, she, they), followed by the past participle. O had é o mesmo para todas as pessoas (I, you, she, they), seguido do particípio passado.

Action finished before another past action

  • When I arrived at the party, John had already left.
  • She told me she had visited Paris before. (Ela me disse que já tinha visitado Paris.)

Finished before a time in the past

Experience up to a point in the past

  • It was the most beautiful beach I had ever seen.
  • I had never flown before that trip. (Eu nunca tinha andado de avião antes daquela viagem.)

Which happened first?

Draw a timeline in your head. The action that happened first takes the past perfect; the later one takes the simple past: The train had left (1st) when we got to the station (2nd).Desenhe uma linha do tempo na cabeça.

B1 Past Perfect Continuous

Use the past perfect continuous for an activity that had been going on for some time before a moment in the past. It often comes with for, since or all day. Ele costuma vir com for, since ou all day.

An activity that explains a past situation

Side by side

Past Perfect (result)Past Perfect Continuous (duration)
He had written the report by five o’clock. (finished: pronto)He had been writing the report for three hours when his boss called. (not necessarily finished: não necessariamente terminado)
She had read three books by the end of the holiday. (quantity: quantidade)She had been reading all afternoon. (activity: atividade)
They had painted the house. (finished: terminado)Their clothes were dirty: they had been painting. (evidence: evidência)

Two quick tips

Quantity or number of times (three books, twice) → past perfect.Quantidade ou número de vezes (three books, twice) → past perfect.

for / since / all day / how long → past perfect continuous (when the action is an activity).for / since / all day / how long → past perfect continuous (quando a ação é uma atividade).

Stative verbs

State verbs (know, believe, understand, own, belong) normally stay in the past perfect: ✓ He had known her for years before they started dating. ✗ He had been knowing her.Verbos de estado (know, believe, understand, own, belong) normalmente ficam no past perfect: ✓ Ele a conhecia havia anos quando começaram a namorar. ✗ He had been knowing her.

Translation

In Portuguese, both tenses often become “tinha + particípio” (tinha cozinhado) or “estava + gerúndio + havia” (estava cozinhando havia horas), and sometimes the translations overlap. So think about the idea (result or duration), not the translation.

Common mistakes

Avoid these

✗ When I arrived, the play already started. ✓ When I arrived, the play had already started.A peça começou antes da chegada: use o past perfect.

✗ He had been knowing her for years. ✓ He had known her for years.

✗ She had been reading three books by Friday. ✓ She had read three books by Friday.Quantidade concluída pede o past perfect simples.

✗ They had been talk for an hour. ✓ They had been talking for an hour.

✗ I had saw that film before. ✓ I had seen that film before.

✗ She was working there for three years when she got promoted. ✓ She had been working there for three years when she got promoted.
