Verbs like give, send, show and buy often have two objects: the thing and the person who receives it. In English, the word order is different from Portuguese, and that is why Brazilians say “I gave to her a present”. Learn the two patterns and you will never make this mistake again. I gave to her a present”.
A2 Two objects: the person and the thing
Many verbs can take a direct object (the thing) and an indirect object (the person who receives it). In the most common pattern, the person comes first, directly after the verb, with no preposition.
- I gave my mother some flowers. (Dei flores para minha mãe.)
- Can you send me the photos from the trip? (Você pode me mandar as fotos da viagem?)
- The teacher showed us a video about the Amazon.
- My dad bought my brother a new bike.
No preposition here
When the person comes first, there is no to or for. Portuguese says “dei para ela”, but English says I gave her, with nothing in between.Quando a pessoa vem primeiro, não existe to nem for. O português diz “dei para ela”, mas o inglês diz I gave her, sem nada no meio.
A2 The second pattern: thing + to / for + person
We can also put the thing first. Then the person comes at the end, after to or for. Both patterns are correct and mean the same.
Use to when the thing goes from one person to another. Use for when you do something to help or benefit someone.
|---|---|---|---|
| to | give, send, show, lend, sell, pass, tell, teach, write, offer, pay, bring, take | She lent her notes to me. | Ela me emprestou as anotações. |
| for | buy, make, cook, get, find, book, save, choose | He cooked dinner for us. | Ele fez o jantar para nós. |
- Please pass the salt to Bruno.
- We sold our old car to a neighbor. (Vendemos nosso carro velho para um vizinho.)
- I booked a table for my parents’ anniversary.
- Can you save a seat for me? (Você pode guardar um lugar para mim?)
Which pattern should I use?
English usually puts the new or important information at the end. If the person is the important part, use to / for: I gave the book to Ana, not to Pedro. If the thing is the important part, put it at the end: I gave Ana a book.O inglês costuma colocar a informação nova ou mais importante no final.
A2 Pronouns as objects
When the person is a pronoun, use the object form: me, you, him, her, us, them. When the thing is a pronoun (it or them), it normally comes right after the verb, and we use the pattern with to / for.Quando a pessoa é um pronome, use a forma de objeto: me, you, him, her, us, them. Quando a coisa é um pronome (it ou them), ela normalmente vem logo depois do verbo, e usamos o padrão com to / for.
| Example | Português | Correct? |
|---|---|---|
| Give me the keys. | Me dá as chaves. | ✓ natural |
| Give the keys to me. | Me dá as chaves. | ✓ natural |
| Give them to me. | Me dá elas. | ✓ best choice |
| Give me them. | Me dá elas. | informal, avoid |
- I love this necklace. My grandmother gave it to me. (Eu amo este colar. Minha avó me deu.)
- Where are the tickets? I sent them to you yesterday. (Cadê os ingressos? Eu te mandei ontem.)
- Did you write him a letter? (Você escreveu uma carta para ele?)
A2 Verbs with only one pattern
Some verbs look like give but do not accept the person directly after the verb. With explain, say, describe, suggest, introduce and recommend, always use to before the person. This is a very common mistake for Brazilians, because in Portuguese we say “me explica”.Alguns verbos parecem com give, mas não aceitam a pessoa logo depois do verbo.
Wrong
The person cannot come right after these verbs.
Can you explain me the rule? (✗)
Right
Put the thing first and the person after to.Coloque a coisa primeiro e a pessoa depois de to.
Can you explain the rule to me? (Você pode me explicar a regra?)
- She described the thief to the police. (Ela descreveu o ladrão para a polícia.)
- Let me introduce my friend Camila to you. (Deixa eu te apresentar minha amiga Camila.)
- What did he say to you? (O que ele te disse?)
Tell, ask and lend
Tell usually takes the person directly: Tell me the truth. Say does not: Say something to me. Ask also takes the person directly: Can I ask you a question?Tell normalmente leva a pessoa direto: Me conta a verdade.
Be careful with “emprestar”: you lend something to someone, and you borrow something from someone. Lend me your pen is correct; “borrow me your pen” is wrong. Lend me your pen está correto; “borrow me your pen” está errado.
