All, both, either, neither and none tell us how many people or things are included. The secret is to ask two questions: are we talking about two or more than two, and is the meaning positive or negative? All, both, either, neither e none indicam quantas pessoas ou coisas estão incluídas. O segredo é fazer duas perguntas: estamos falando de dois ou de mais de dois, e o sentido é positivo ou negativo?
B1 Two or more than two?
English has separate words for groups of two and for groups of three or more. In Portuguese, “os dois”, “nenhum dos dois” and “qualquer um dos dois” show the same idea.O inglês tem palavras diferentes para grupos de dois e para grupos de três ou mais. Em português, “os dois”, “nenhum dos dois” e “qualquer um dos dois” mostram a mesma ideia.
| Meaning | Two | Three or more | Português |
|---|---|---|---|
| positive, everyone | both | all | os dois / todos |
| one or the other | either | any | qualquer um (dos dois) |
| negative, zero | neither | none / no | nenhum (dos dois) |
All and both
Both (two) and all (three or more) go before a plural noun. Before the, my, these etc., of is optional. Before an object pronoun (us, you, them), of is obligatory. Both (dois) e all (três ou mais) vêm antes de substantivo no plural. Antes de the, my, these etc., o of é opcional. Antes de pronome objeto (us, you, them), o of é obrigatório.

Position after the subject
All and both can also come after the subject: before a main verb, but after be and after the first auxiliary. All e both também podem vir depois do sujeito: antes do verbo principal, mas depois de be e depois do primeiro auxiliar.
We both love pizza. They are all tired. The kids have all finished.Nós dois adoramos pizza. Eles estão todos cansados. As crianças já terminaram todas.
Either and neither
Either means “one or the other, it doesn’t matter which” and neither means “not one and not the other”. Both refer to two. Before a noun, use the SINGULAR: either day, neither answer. With of, use a plural noun or pronoun.Either significa “um ou outro, tanto faz qual” e neither significa “nem um nem outro”. Os dois se referem a dois. Antes de substantivo, use o SINGULAR: either day, neither answer. Com of, use substantivo no plural ou pronome.
- You can come on Saturday or Sunday. Either day is fine. (Pode vir no sábado ou no domingo. Qualquer um dos dois dias está bom.)
- I tried two jackets, but neither fitted me. (Experimentei duas jaquetas, mas nenhuma das duas serviu.)
- Neither of my parents speaks English. (Nem meu pai nem minha mãe falam inglês.)
- There are trees on either side of the street. (Há árvores dos dois lados da rua.)
Either … or and neither … nor
either … or
“Ou … ou”: one of the two options.“Ou … ou”: uma das duas opções.
We can either take the bus or walk. (Ou pegamos o ônibus ou vamos a pé.)
neither … nor
“Nem … nem”: the verb stays affirmative.“Nem … nem”: o verbo fica na afirmativa.
Neither Ana nor Bruno came to the meeting. (Nem a Ana nem o Bruno vieram à reunião.)
Me neither
To agree with a negative sentence, do not say “me too”. Say Me neither (informal) or Neither do I / Neither am I. I don’t like horror films. Me neither.Para concordar com uma frase negativa, não diga “me too”. Diga Me neither (informal) ou Neither do I / Neither am I. Não gosto de filme de terror. Nem eu.
B1+ None, no and not any
For zero in a group of three or more, English has three options. No goes directly before a noun. None is a pronoun: it stands alone or takes of. Not … any uses a negative verb. Never combine them with another negative.Para dizer zero em um grupo de três ou mais, o inglês tem três opções. No vem direto antes do substantivo. None é pronome: aparece sozinho ou com of. Not … any usa o verbo na negativa. Nunca combine essas formas com outra negação.
| Form | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| no + noun | There are no seats left. | Não sobrou nenhum lugar. |
| not … any + noun | There aren’t any seats left. | Não sobrou nenhum lugar. |
| none (alone) | How many seats are left? None. | Quantos lugares sobraram? Nenhum. |
| none of + the / them | None of the seats were free. | Nenhum dos lugares estava livre. |

Singular or plural verb?
After none of, neither of and either of + plural noun, a singular verb is more formal and a plural verb is common in conversation. In exams and formal writing, prefer the singular: None of the candidates has experience.Depois de none of, neither of e either of + substantivo no plural, o verbo no singular é mais formal, e o plural é comum na conversa. Em provas e textos formais, prefira o singular: Nenhum dos candidatos tem experiência.
With neither … nor and either … or, the verb agrees with the nearer subject: Neither the teacher nor the students were ready.Com neither … nor e either … or, o verbo concorda com o sujeito mais próximo: Nem a professora nem os alunos estavam prontos.
Any: it doesn’t matter which
In affirmative sentences, any + singular noun means “qualquer um” in a group of three or more. For two options, use either.Em frases afirmativas, any + substantivo no singular significa “qualquer um” em um grupo de três ou mais. Para duas opções, use either.
- Take any book you like from the shelf. (Pegue qualquer livro da estante.)
- Tea or coffee? Either is fine, thanks. (Chá ou café? Qualquer um, obrigado.)
Negatives with both and all
Brazilians often translate “os dois não vieram” as “both of them didn’t come”. In English, the natural form is Neither of them came. With all, a negative verb is ambiguous, so say None of … for zero, or Not all … for “nem todos”.Os brasileiros muitas vezes traduzem “os dois não vieram” como “both of them didn’t come”. Em inglês, a forma natural é Neither of them came. Com all, o verbo negativo fica ambíguo, então diga None of … para zero, ou Not all … para “nem todos”.
- None of the students passed the test. (Nenhum aluno passou na prova.)
- Not all the students passed the test. (Nem todos os alunos passaram na prova.)
All, everybody and the whole
We do not normally use all alone as a subject for people: say everybody or everyone, or all of us / all the guests. All alone as a subject means “the only thing”: All I want is some sleep. With singular nouns, all day and the whole day mean the same.Normalmente não usamos all sozinho como sujeito para pessoas: diga everybody ou everyone, ou all of us / all the guests. All sozinho como sujeito significa “a única coisa”: Tudo o que eu quero é dormir um pouco. Com substantivos no singular, all day e the whole day significam a mesma coisa.
- Everybody was happy with the results. (Todo mundo ficou feliz com os resultados.)
- It rained all day, so we stayed in the whole weekend. (Choveu o dia todo, então ficamos em casa o fim de semana inteiro.)
