Prepositions: Advanced Patterns

Preposições: Padrões AvançadosPrepositionsC1

At C1, the question is no longer which preposition to use, but where to put it. English lets prepositions move to the end of questions, relative clauses and passives, something Portuguese never does, and it also has a large family of multi-word prepositions that make writing precise and formal. This post shows you how to control both.No C1, a questão não é mais qual preposição usar, e sim onde colocá-la. O inglês permite que as preposições vão para o fim de perguntas, orações relativas e voz passiva, algo que o português nunca faz, e ainda tem uma grande família de preposições compostas que deixam a escrita precisa e formal. Este post mostra como dominar as duas coisas.

C1 Stranded prepositions in questions

In Portuguese, the preposition always stays in front of the question word: “Com quem você falou?”. In English, the natural choice in speech is to leave the preposition at the end, after the verb. This is called a stranded preposition, and it is perfectly correct.Em português, a preposição sempre fica antes da palavra interrogativa: “Com quem você falou?”. Em inglês, a escolha natural na fala é deixar a preposição no fim, depois do verbo. Isso se chama preposição stranded (“encalhada”), e é perfeitamente correto.

Neutral / informal (stranded)Formal (fronted)Português
Who did you talk to?To whom did you talk?Com quem você falou?
What are you looking at?At what are you looking?Para o que você está olhando?
Which hotel did you stay at?At which hotel did you stay?Em que hotel você ficou?
Who is this letter from? From whom is this letter?De quem é esta carta?

The formal version sounds stiff in conversation; keep it for very formal writing. When the preposition is fronted, use whom, never who.A versão formal soa engessada numa conversa; reserve-a para a escrita muito formal. Quando a preposição vem na frente, use whom, nunca who.

  • Who are you waiting for? (Por quem você está esperando?)
  • What is this tool used for? (Para que serve esta ferramenta?)
  • Where do you come from originally? (De onde você é originalmente?)

Always stranded

Some questions only work with the preposition at the end: What’s it like?, What for?, Where are you from?, What are you so worried about? Phrasal verbs also keep their particle with the verb: What time did you get up?Algumas perguntas só funcionam com a preposição no fim: What’s it like? (Como é?), What for? (Para quê?), Where are you from? (De onde você é?), What are you so worried about? (Com o que você está tão preocupado?). Os phrasal verbs também mantêm a partícula junto ao verbo: A que horas você levantou?

C1 Prepositions in relative clauses

Relative clauses offer the same two options. In everyday English, we strand the preposition and often omit the pronoun. In formal English, we put the preposition before whom or which. Two pronouns can never follow a preposition: that and who.As orações relativas oferecem as mesmas duas opções. No inglês do dia a dia, deixamos a preposição no fim e muitas vezes omitimos o pronome. No inglês formal, colocamos a preposição antes de whom ou which. Dois pronomes nunca podem vir depois de preposição: that e who.

Formal:noun+preposition + whom / which+clause

Everyday English

Preposition at the end, pronoun often omitted.Preposição no fim, pronome muitas vezes omitido.

That’s the colleague I work with. (Esse é o colega com quem eu trabalho.)

Formal English

Preposition first, then whom or which.Preposição primeiro, depois whom ou which.

That is the colleague with whom I work. (Esse é o colega com quem eu trabalho.)

  • The town I grew up in has changed a lot. (A cidade em que eu cresci mudou muito.)
  • The committee to which the report was sent has not replied. (O comitê ao qual o relatório foi enviado não respondeu.)
  • She has three brothers, two of whom live in Portugal. (Ela tem três irmãos, dois dos quais moram em Portugal.)
  • It is hard to measure the extent to which the policy has worked. (É difícil medir até que ponto a política funcionou.)

Where, when and phrasal verbs

In which and where are often interchangeable for places: the house in which / where she was born. But with phrasal verbs the particle stays with the verb: the problem we came up against, not “against which we came up”.In which e where muitas vezes são intercambiáveis para lugares: a casa em que / onde ela nasceu. Mas, com phrasal verbs, a partícula fica junto do verbo: the problem we came up against (o problema que enfrentamos), e não “against which we came up”.

C1 Passives, infinitives and wh-clauses

When a prepositional verb becomes passive, the preposition stays right after the verb, with no object. Brazilians often drop it because Portuguese has no equivalent structure: “Ela foi operada” is She was operated on.Quando um verbo preposicionado vai para a voz passiva, a preposição fica logo depois do verbo, sem objeto. Os brasileiros costumam omiti-la porque o português não tem estrutura equivalente: “Ela foi operada” é She was operated on.

  • The complaint has already been dealt with. (A reclamação já foi resolvida.)
  • I hate being laughed at. (Odeio que riam de mim.)
  • The new coach is well spoken of in the club. (O novo técnico é bem falado no clube.)

The same happens after an adjective or noun followed by a to-infinitive, and in wh-clauses used as subjects or objects. The preposition belongs to the verb, so it stays at the end.O mesmo acontece depois de um adjetivo ou substantivo seguido de to + infinitivo, e em orações com wh- usadas como sujeito ou objeto. A preposição pertence ao verbo, então fica no fim.

ExamplePortuguêsStructure
He’s very easy to talk to.É muito fácil conversar com ele.adjective + to-infinitive
We need a quiet place to live in.Precisamos de um lugar tranquilo para morar.noun + to-infinitive
She has nobody to rely on.Ela não tem com quem contar.pronoun + to-infinitive
What I’m worried about is the cost.O que me preocupa é o custo.wh-clause as subject
This case is worth looking into.Vale a pena investigar este caso.worth + -ing

C1 Complex prepositions

Complex prepositions are fixed groups of two or three words that work as a single preposition. They are typical of academic, legal and business English, and they cannot be split or stranded: they always come before their noun phrase or -ing form.As preposições compostas são grupos fixos de duas ou três palavras que funcionam como uma única preposição. São típicas do inglês acadêmico, jurídico e empresarial, e não podem ser separadas nem ir para o fim da frase: sempre vêm antes do seu sintagma nominal ou da forma com -ing.

Teacher’s tip: register in essays

In a formal essay, complex prepositions make your argument sound precise: with regard to instead of about, prior to instead of before, owing to instead of because of. Do not overdo it: two or three per paragraph is plenty.Numa redação formal, as preposições compostas deixam seu argumento mais preciso: with regard to em vez de about, prior to em vez de before, owing to em vez de because of. Não exagere: duas ou três por parágrafo já bastam.
