Writing Your College Application Essay in English

Como Escrever a Redação de Admissão em InglêsStudy AbroadB1–C1

Your grades and test scores show what you have done. Your application essay shows who you are: how you think, what you care about and how you will add to a campus. This guide covers the Common App personal statement, the supplemental essays that US (United States) colleges ask for, the new UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) personal statement for the UK (United Kingdom), and the motivation letter and statement of purpose used in Europe and in graduate study. You will also find the English you need to open, connect and close your ideas, side-by-side pairs of weak and strong sentences, the mistakes Brazilian students make most often and a final checklist. Prompts and limits can change from one year to the next, so always confirm them on the official website of each platform and university.

The seven Common App prompts

For the 2026–2027 cycle, the Common App kept the same seven prompts as the year before. Here is what each one asks, in short.

PromptTopicWhat it asks, in shortPortuguês
1Backgrounda background, identity, interest or talent so meaningful that your application would be incomplete without italgo da sua história, da sua identidade, um interesse ou um talento tão importante que, sem ele, a faculdade não conheceria você de verdade
2Challengea challenge, setback or failure: how it affected you and what you learnedum desafio, um tropeço ou um fracasso: como isso afetou você e o que você aprendeu
3Beliefa time you questioned or challenged a belief or idea: why, and what happeneduma vez em que você questionou uma crença ou ideia: por que e o que aconteceu
4Gratitudesomething someone did for you that made you happy or thankful in a surprising way, and how it motivated youalgo que alguém fez por você e que deixou você feliz ou grato de um jeito surpreendente, e como isso motivou você
5Growthan accomplishment, event or realisation that sparked personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or othersuma conquista, um acontecimento ou algo que você percebeu e que fez você amadurecer e entender melhor a si mesmo ou os outros
6Passiona topic, idea or concept so engaging that you lose track of time, and where you go to learn moreum assunto, ideia ou conceito tão envolvente que você perde a noção do tempo, e onde você busca aprender mais
7Your choicean essay on any topic: one you already wrote, one for another prompt or one of your own designuma redação sobre qualquer tema: uma que você já escreveu, uma para outro tema ou uma criada por você

One essay for every college

The Common App personal essay goes to all the colleges on your list, so never name one university in it. The box accepts up to 650 words, and the minimum is 250. In the most recent cycle, the most popular prompt was Topic of Your Choice. The prompt matters less than the story: choose the one that lets you show something true and specific about yourself.

Ways to open your essay

Admissions officers read thousands of essays. A first line that drops the reader into a moment, a detail or a question works much better than a general statement about your whole life.

Type of openingExamplePortuguês
a sceneThe power went out ten minutes before my piano exam.
a line of dialogue“You’re too quiet to lead this team,” my coach told me.“Você é quieta demais para liderar este time”, meu técnico me disse.
a surprising detailI have read the same chemistry textbook four times, and I still find mistakes in it.Já li o mesmo livro de química quatro vezes e ainda encontro erros nele.
a questionWhy does my grandmother’s bread never taste the same when I bake it?Por que o pão da minha avó nunca fica com o mesmo gosto quando eu faço?
a confessionI failed my first coding project, and it was the best thing that happened to me that year.
a strong imageEvery Saturday, our kitchen table turns into a classroom for six neighbours.

Write it first, polish it later

Your first draft will be too long, and that is normal. Write freely, then cut everything that does not show who you are. Read the essay aloud: if a sentence sounds like a speech or a school report, rewrite it in your own voice.O seu primeiro rascunho vai ficar longo demais, e isso é normal.

  • I chose prompt 2 because I wanted to write about my move to a new city.
  • My first draft had 900 words, so I had to cut a lot. (Meu primeiro rascunho tinha 900 palavras, então precisei cortar muita coisa.)
  • My counselor said my hook was strong, but my ending was weak.
  • I’m still working on the reflection part of my essay.
  • The essay is not about the trophy; it’s about what I learned.
  • I wrote five drafts before the essay sounded like me.

B2 Supplemental essays, show-don’t-tell and transitions

The most common supplemental essays

Many colleges add their own short essays. They are often shorter than the personal statement, but they matter just as much, because they show how well you know the college and how you would fit in.Muitas faculdades pedem também as suas próprias redações curtas.

TypeTypical questionWhat it should showPortuguês
“Why us?”Why do you want to attend our college?specific courses, professors, programmes or traditions that match your goalsmatérias, professores, programas ou tradições daquela faculdade que combinam com os seus objetivos
“Why this major?”Why are you interested in the field you selected?where your interest started, what you have done about it and where you want to goonde o seu interesse começou, o que você já fez a respeito e aonde você quer chegar
CommunityDescribe a community you belong to and your place in it.a real group (family, school, team, church, online club) and what you give to itum grupo real (família, escola, time, igreja, clube online) e o que você oferece a ele
ActivityTell us about one of your extracurricular activities.one activity in depth: your role, a moment that mattered and what changeduma atividade em profundidade: o seu papel, um momento marcante e o que mudou
Diversity of thoughtTell us about a time you disagreed with someone.that you can listen, respect other views and still think for yourselfque você sabe ouvir, respeitar outras opiniões e mesmo assim pensar por conta própria
Short answersWhat is a book that changed the way you think?personality and curiosity in very few wordspersonalidade e curiosidade em pouquíssimas palavras

The “Why us?” test

Cover the college’s name in your essay. If the text could be sent to any other college, it is too general. Mention things you can only find there: a named programme, a research centre, a first-year seminar, a student club, and explain why each one matters to you.

Show, don’t tell

This is the most important rule of personal writing in English. Instead of telling the reader that you have a quality, show it through an action, a detail or a result, and let the reader reach the conclusion.

Telling

A label with no proof. The reader has to believe you.Um rótulo sem prova. O leitor tem que acreditar em você.

I am a very responsible and hard-working person. (Sou uma pessoa muito responsável e esforçada.)

Showing

A concrete action. The reader sees the quality for themselves.Uma ação de verdade. O leitor vê a qualidade sozinho.

For two years, I opened my family’s bakery at 5 a.m. before school.

Weak and strong sentences, side by side

This experience taught me a lot.I learned to ask for help before a problem gets too big to fix alone.it says exactly what you learned · diz exatamente o que você aprendeu
I am a natural leader. When our robotics team stopped talking to each other, I set up a ten-minute check-in before every practice.leadership as an action, not a label · liderança como ação, não como rótulo
Your university is one of the best in the world.Your first-year research programme would let me test my water-filter idea in a real lab.a specific reason linked to you · um motivo específico ligado a você
I did many activities, such as volleyball, debate, volunteering and music.Debate taught me to listen to the other side before I answer.depth beats a list · profundidade vale mais do que uma lista

Your essay must be your own work

The Common App’s rules say that sending a text written by an AI (artificial intelligence) tool as your own work is fraud. UCAS also checks every personal statement with software that finds copied or very similar texts. A teacher or counselor can give you feedback, but the ideas, the story and the words must be yours.

  • I rewrote my “Why us?” essay because it sounded too general. (Reescrevi minha redação “Why us?” porque ela estava genérica demais.)
  • Instead of saying I’m creative, I described the board game I designed.
  • My community essay is about the chess club I started online.
  • The prompt asks for 250 words, so every sentence has to count.
  • I mentioned two professors whose research I’ve read. (Citei dois professores cujas pesquisas eu li.)
  • Looking back, losing that election taught me more than winning would have.

C1 The UCAS statement, Europe, graduate study and tone

The UCAS personal statement: three questions

From 2026 entry onwards, the UCAS personal statement is no longer one free essay. You answer three questions in separate boxes, but admissions tutors read the answers together as one statement. UK universities focus on the subject: most of your text should be about the course, your preparation and your academic interest.

QuestionWhat to includePortuguês
1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?what motivates you, what you have explored or find interesting in the subject and how the course fits your future planso que motiva você, o que você já explorou ou acha interessante na área e como o curso se encaixa nos seus planos
2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?your most recent and relevant studies, projects, competitions and the skills they gave you, without repeating your gradesseus estudos mais recentes e relevantes, projetos, olimpíadas e as habilidades que eles trouxeram, sem repetir as suas notas
3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?work, volunteering, hobbies and personal experiences, and what you learned from them; a good place to say why you want to study in the UKtrabalho, voluntariado, hobbies e experiências pessoais, e o que você aprendeu com eles; um bom lugar para dizer por que quer estudar no Reino Unido

The numbers that matter

You have 4,000 characters in total, including spaces, and you can divide them as you like, but each answer needs at least 350 characters. The same statement goes to all five of your UCAS choices, so write about the subject, not about one university. Do not repeat the same information in two answers, and avoid famous quotes and clichés.

Read the instructions word by word

Names change from one university to another: one may ask for a “motivation letter”, another for a “personal statement” with the same content. What counts is the question they ask, the length they allow and the format they want (letter, essay or form). When the instructions give a limit in characters, check whether spaces count.

Ways to close your essay

A good ending does not summarise the whole essay. It goes back to the opening image, shows how you have changed or looks forward to what you will do next.

return to the openingThe power still goes out sometimes, but now I keep playing in the dark.
show the changeI no longer see mistakes as the end of a project, but as its first real data.

Mistakes Brazilian students often make

Many problems come from writing in Portuguese in your head and translating word by word, or from copying the style of the ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio) essay, which is argumentative and impersonal. An application essay is personal, specific and written in the first person.

Portuguese habit✗ Literal or weak✓ Natural English
“realizar um sonho”I want to realize my dream.I want to achieve my goal of becoming an engineer.
“fazer um curso”I made a course of robotics.I took a robotics course.
“assistir a uma palestra”I assisted a lecture about genetics.I attended a lecture on genetics.
“formação”My formation in sciences is solid.I have a strong background in science.
“Venho por meio desta…”I come by means of this letter to present my candidacy.I am applying for the master’s programme in data science.
“Hoje em dia, a sociedade…”Nowadays, society is facing many challenges.Last March, the river behind my school flooded for the third time.
“Sou uma pessoa…”I am a dedicated, responsible and proactive person.I tutored three classmates in maths every week of my final year.
“oportunidade única”It would be a unique opportunity and an immense honour.Your marine biology field course is exactly what I am looking for.

Find the right tone

Write in a natural, clear and slightly formal voice, as if you were talking to an interested teacher. Use I freely: the essay is about you. Avoid flowery words (utilise, endeavour, plethora) when a simple word works (use, try, many). Short forms such as I’m are common in US personal essays; in a UCAS statement or an SOP, full forms usually sound more appropriate.

Final checklist

Before you click submit

✓ The essay answers the prompt or question that was asked.A redação responde ao que foi perguntado.

✓ It is within the word or character limit.

✓ The first line makes the reader want to continue.A primeira frase dá vontade de continuar lendo.

✓ Every quality is shown with an example, not just named.

✓ It focuses on one or two stories, not a list of achievements.

✓ The ending shows reflection or looks forward.O final traz uma reflexão ou olha para o futuro.

✓ The right college name appears in each “Why us?” essay.O nome certo da faculdade aparece em cada redação “Why us?”.

✓ Someone you trust has read it, and you have read it aloud.

  • My UCAS statement is mostly about why I want to study economics.

  • My SOP explains how my undergraduate research led to my master’s plans. (Meu statement of purpose explica como a minha pesquisa na graduação me levou aos planos de mestrado.)
  • I cut the famous quote from my introduction and started with a scene.
  • My teacher read my essay and said it finally sounded like me.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I want to realize my dream of studying abroad. ✓ I want to study abroad.

✗ I have 17 years. ✓ I am 17.Idade em inglês usa o verbo be.

✗ I made an exchange in Canada. ✓ I did an exchange programme in Canada.Com exchange, use do ou go on, e não make.

✗ Since I was a child, I always dreamed… ✓ At 12, I built my first website.

✗ Dear Harvard, I would love to study at Yale. ✓ Check the college name in every essay.

✗ I am very interested in your course because it is very good. ✓ Your course combines law and computer science, which is exactly my interest.
