The University Interview in English

A Entrevista de Admissão em InglêsStudy AbroadB1–C1

Many universities abroad, most scholarship programmes and almost every US student visa application include an interview in English. It can be a friendly chat with someone who studied there, a conversation about your subject with a professor at Oxford or Cambridge, or a few quick questions at the US Consulate. This guide shows you which interview you may meet, the questions you will almost certainly hear, how to build clear answers with the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method, and simple phrases to gain time, check a question and end the conversation well. Rules and formats change every year, so always confirm the details on the official website of each university and government.

B1 Types of interviews and the classic questions

Interview vocabulary

Which interview will you have?

Each interview has a different goal. Before you prepare, find out who will talk to you and what they need to decide.

InterviewWho talks to youWhat they want to knowPortuguês
US alumni interviewsomeone who studied there, in person, by phone or by videoyour personality, your interests and why the university fits youentrevista com quem estudou lá: quem você é, do que você gosta e por que a universidade combina com você
informational interviewpeople from the admissions office or current students, at some collegesa two-way chat: you learn about the college and they learn about youconversa para tirar dúvidas: você conhece a faculdade e ela conhece você
Oxford or Cambridge interviewprofessors, usually from the subject you want to studyhow you think, solve new problems and talk about your subjectentrevista em Oxford ou Cambridge: como você pensa, resolve problemas novos e conversa sobre a matéria

UK credibility interviewsomeone from the UK government, usually by video callthat you really want to study and that your English is good enoughentrevista de visto do Reino Unido: se você quer mesmo estudar e se o seu inglês é bom o suficiente

Not every university interviews

At Harvard, people who studied there do the interviews, but in most places they cannot talk to every applicant. If you don’t get an interview, your application is still complete. Interviews with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Educational Counselors are not required either. Georgetown is different: it asks every first-year applicant to have an interview, unless there is no interviewer near you. These rules change, so check each university’s website every year.

The classic questions

Whatever the interview, these questions appear again and again. Behind each one there is a simple thing the interviewer wants to find out.

QuestionWhat they really want to knowPortuguês
Tell me about yourself.a short picture of who you are today, not your whole life storyFale um pouco sobre você.
Why this university?that you researched this specific place and know what it offersPor que esta universidade?
Why this major?where your interest comes from and what you have already done about itPor que você escolheu este curso?
What will you contribute to our community?what you will give to campus life, not only what you will getCom o que você vai contribuir para a nossa comunidade?
What do you do outside school?that you have real interests beyond gradesO que você faz fora da escola?
Do you have any questions for me?real curiosity about the university: never just say “No”Você tem alguma pergunta para mim?

Major, course or programme?

In the US, your main subject at university is your major (I want to major in biology). In the UK, you apply for a course (I’ve applied for the Economics course). Programme (US: program) is a general word that works in both countries.Nos EUA, o curso principal que você escolhe na universidade é o major (I want to major in biology). No Reino Unido, você se candidata a um course (I’ve applied for the Economics course).

Tell me about yourself

This is usually the first question. Answer in about one minute, in three steps: who you are now, one experience from the past that shaped you, and what you want for the future.

Present: who you are now+Past: one story that shaped you+Future: what you want to study and why
  • I’m in my final year of high school at a bilingual school in Brazil.
  • I’m 17, and I’m applying to universities in the US and the UK. (Tenho 17 anos e estou me candidatando a universidades nos EUA e no Reino Unido.)
  • Two years ago, I started a recycling project at my school.
  • That project made me want to study environmental engineering. (Esse projeto me fez querer cursar engenharia ambiental.)
  • Outside school, I play the guitar and tutor younger students in maths.
  • In the future, I’d like to design cleaner water systems for Brazilian cities.

Prepare ideas, not scripts

A memorised answer sounds robotic, and it falls apart when the interviewer asks something slightly different. Prepare three or four real stories from your life and a few key words for each one. Then practise telling them in different ways, out loud, with a friend or a teacher.

B2 STAR answers and useful phrases

The STAR method

Questions such as Tell me about a time when …, Give me an example of … or What’s your biggest achievement? want a real story. The STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method keeps it short and clear.Perguntas como Tell me about a time when …, Give me an example of … ou What’s your biggest achievement? pedem uma história real. O método STAR (Situação, Tarefa, Ação, Resultado) deixa a resposta curta e clara.

Situation+Task+Action+Result
STARExample answerPortuguês
SituationIn my second year of high school, our science fair was almost cancelled because of budget cuts.
TaskAs class representative, I had to find a way to keep the fair going with less money.
ActionI put together a team of ten students, found two local sponsors and moved part of the fair online.
ResultMore than 200 people took part, and the school now runs the fair this way every year.

Three rules for a STAR story

Tell the story in the past simple (I organised, I found, I learned). Focus on I, not only we: the interviewer wants to know what you did. Finish with a result you can show, such as a number, a change or something you learned.Conte a história no past simple (I organised, I found, I learned).

Weak answers and strong answers

A weak answer is short, general and could be said by anyone. A strong answer is specific, gives an example and connects you to the university.

C1 Visa interviews, academic interviews and etiquette

A visa officer and an Oxford tutor want very different things. The officer wants short, true answers in a few minutes; the tutor wants to watch you think aloud about difficult ideas. Train both skills. Vale a pena treinar as duas coisas.

The US student visa interview

First, your university sends your I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status), the document you need to ask for a student visa. Then you pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee, fill in the DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application) and book an interview at a US Embassy or Consulate in the country where you live. The interview is usually in English and quite short. By US law, the officer has to be sure of three things: you really are a student, you can pay for your studies, and you will go home when your course ends.

Typical questionWhat the officer checksPortuguês
Why did you choose this university?that you know your programme wellPor que você escolheu esta universidade?
What are you going to study?that your academic plans are clearO que você vai estudar?
Who is paying for your studies?that the money matches the numbers on your I-20Quem vai pagar pelos seus estudos?
What do your parents do?your family’s financial situationSeus pais trabalham com o quê?
Have you been to the US before?your travel historyVocê já esteve nos EUA?
Do you have any relatives in the US?whether you might want to stay in the USVocê tem parentes nos EUA?
What will you do after you graduate?that you plan to return homeO que você vai fazer depois de se formar?

OfficerGood morning. What’s the purpose of your trip?Bom dia. Qual é o motivo da sua viagem?
StudentGood morning. I’m going to study computer science at Purdue University, in Indiana.Bom dia.
OfficerWhy did you choose Purdue?Por que você escolheu a Purdue?
StudentI want to work in cybersecurity, and their course is very strong in that area. They also gave me a partial scholarship.
OfficerWho is paying for the rest?Quem vai pagar o restante?
StudentMy parents. My father is an engineer and my mother owns a pharmacy. I have their bank statements here.Meus pais.

StudentI want to come back to Brazil and work in cybersecurity for a bank.

US visa rules to know in 2026

Since 02/09/2025, almost everyone who asks for a visa, students included, needs an in-person interview at the consulate.

Book your interview in the country where you live. Applying in another country can make it harder to get the visa.Agende a entrevista no país onde você mora.

Since June 2025, F, M and J applicants (students and exchange visitors) are asked to set all their social media profiles to “public”.Desde junho de 2025, quem pede vistos F, M e J (estudantes e intercambistas) precisa deixar todos os perfis de redes sociais como “públicos”.

Speak for yourself: the officer wants to interview you, not your family. What you say must match your DS-160 and the documents that show who is paying.

Short, true and consistent

At the consulate, long speeches don’t help you. Answer the question you heard in one or two clear sentences, then stop. Never memorise a “perfect” answer: an officer can easily tell, and a natural answer in simple English is much more convincing. No consulado, falar demais atrapalha.

The UK credibility interview

When you apply for a UK Student visa from abroad, UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) may call you for a credibility interview: a short interview in English, usually by video call with someone from the UK government. They want to check that you really want to study and that your English is good enough. Expect questions about your school, your course and university, why you chose the UK, your future plans and how you will pay for everything. Some students are called for a second, longer interview about money and documents.

  • Why did you choose this course and this university?
  • Which modules are you most interested in? (Quais matérias do curso você mais quer fazer?)
  • Why didn’t you choose to study in Brazil?
  • How will you pay your tuition fees and living costs?
  • Where will you live, and how much will it cost per month? (Onde você vai morar, e quanto vai custar por mês?)
  • What do you plan to do after you finish your course?

Oxford and Cambridge: thinking aloud

Interviews at Oxford and Cambridge are all about your subject: Oxford says they feel like a short class with someone who knows the subject well. Oxford holds its interviews online, on Microsoft Teams, in December 2026. At Cambridge, the main interview period is 07/12 to 18/12/2026; each college (the smaller communities that make up the university) decides if interviews are online or in person, and most applicants have one or two interviews, lasting 35 minutes to an hour in total. Tutors may show you a problem, a text or an object you have never seen. They do not expect a perfect answer: they want to hear how you think.

PhraseWhy it helpsPortuguês
Can I think out loud for a moment?lets the tutor follow your reasoningPosso pensar em voz alta por um instante?
I’m not sure, but my first guess would be …shows reasoning even without the answerNão tenho certeza, mas meu primeiro palpite seria …
If we assume that …, then …builds your idea step by stepSe a gente imaginar que …, então …
On the one hand …, but on the other hand …looks at both sides of a questionPor um lado …, mas por outro …
That changes my answer. Now I’d say …shows you can update your ideasIsso muda a minha resposta. Agora eu diria …
Could I go back to what I said earlier?corrects a mistake calmlyPosso voltar ao que eu disse antes?

Scholarship interviews

In a scholarship interview, there are usually several people asking questions, and the scholarship has a clear goal, such as leadership, research or helping society. Read about that goal and connect your STAR stories to it. Be ready to talk about your plans, why this scholarship matters to you and how you want to help your community in the future.

Keep your phone silent and don’t read notes from the screen.interviewers notice when your eyes move to readDeixe o celular no silencioso e não leia anotações na tela: o entrevistador percebe o movimento dos olhos.
  • Can you hear me clearly? (Você está me ouvindo bem?)
  • Sorry, you froze for a moment. Could you repeat the last part? (Desculpe, a imagem travou por um momento. Você poderia repetir a última parte?)
  • I’m sorry, the audio cut out. I missed the end of your question. (Desculpe, o áudio cortou. Não ouvi o final da sua pergunta.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I have 17 years. ✓ I’m 17 years old.Para falar de idade, o inglês usa o verbo be, e não have.

✗ Actually, I’m in my last year of high school. ✓ Currently, I’m in my last year of high school.Actually significa “na verdade”; “atualmente” é currently.

✗ I assisted a lecture at the university. ✓ I attended a lecture at the university.“Assistir a uma aula ou palestra” é attend; assist significa ajudar.

✗ A memorised speech that ignores the question. ✓ Key ideas you can adapt to any question.Resposta decorada soa falsa; prepare ideias e histórias, não textos prontos.

✗ We won the competition. ✓ I led the research, and our team won the competition.O entrevistador quer saber o que você fez, então use I para falar da sua parte.
