Many students try to memorize phrasal verbs one by one, like a list of random words. But the little word at the end, the particle, often has its own meaning. Once you know that up can mean “completely” and off can mean “stop” or “leave”, hundreds of phrasal verbs start to make sense, and you can even guess new ones.Muitos alunos tentam decorar os phrasal verbs um por um, como uma lista de palavras soltas. Mas a palavrinha do final, a partícula, muitas vezes tem um sentido próprio. Quando você sabe que up pode significar “completamente” e off pode significar “parar” ou “ir embora”, centenas de phrasal verbs passam a fazer sentido, e você consegue até adivinhar os novos.
