Word Order Before a Noun

Ordem das Palavras Antes do SubstantivoWord OrderA2

In Portuguese we say um carro vermelho and os três primeiros dias. In English, the words that describe a noun come before it, and they follow a fixed order: a red car, the first three days. Learn where adjectives, numbers, all and both go, and which few words come after the noun, and your sentences will sound natural right away.Em português dizemos um carro vermelho e os três primeiros dias. Em inglês, as palavras que descrevem um substantivo vêm antes dele e seguem uma ordem fixa: a red car, the first three days. Aprenda onde ficam os adjetivos, os números, all e both, e quais são as poucas palavras que vêm depois do substantivo, e as suas frases vão soar naturais na hora.

A2 Adjectives go before the noun

In English, an adjective comes before the noun it describes, never after it. And adjectives never change: they have no plural and no masculine or feminine form.Em inglês, o adjetivo vem antes do substantivo que ele descreve, nunca depois. E os adjetivos nunca mudam: não têm plural nem forma masculina ou feminina.

a / the / my+adjective+noun
  • She has a beautiful voice. (Ela tem uma voz linda.)
  • We live in a small apartment. (Nós moramos num apartamento pequeno.)
  • I bought two white shirts. (Comprei duas camisas brancas.)
  • They are very good friends. (Eles são amigos muito bons.)

No -s on adjectives

✗ two whites shirts ✓ two white shirts. ✗ a car red ✓ a red car. Only the noun takes the plural -s.Só o substantivo recebe o -s do plural. O adjetivo fica sempre igual e sempre antes.

A noun before a noun

A noun can also describe another noun. The describing noun comes first and stays singular, even when the meaning is plural: a shoe shop sells many shoes. The same happens with numbers and a hyphen: a ten-minute walk, not “a ten-minutes walk”.Um substantivo também pode descrever outro substantivo. O que descreve vem primeiro e fica no singular, mesmo quando o sentido é plural: a shoe shop (uma loja de sapatos) vende muitos sapatos. O mesmo acontece com números e hífen: a ten-minute walk (uma caminhada de dez minutos), e não “a ten-minutes walk”.

Portuguese order

The main noun first, then de + the describing word.O substantivo principal primeiro, depois de + a palavra que descreve.

ponto de ônibus, loja de sapatos, uma viagem de três horas

English order

The describing noun first, in the singular, then the main noun.O substantivo que descreve primeiro, no singular, depois o principal.

bus stop, shoe shop, a three-hour trip

A2 First, last, next and numbers

This is the order that surprises Brazilians most. In English, first, last, next and other come before the number: the first three days (os três primeiros dias). Adjectives come after the number, right before the noun.Esta é a ordem que mais surpreende os brasileiros. Em inglês, first, last, next e other vêm antes do número: the first three days (os três primeiros dias). Os adjetivos vêm depois do número, logo antes do substantivo.

A2 All, both and half come first

all / both + the / my + noun

All and both come before the or my.All e both vêm antes de the ou my.

A2 The few words that come after

A few words break the “before the noun” rule. Learn these as fixed patterns: they are very common in everyday English.Algumas palavras quebram a regra do “antes do substantivo”. Aprenda estas como estruturas fixas: elas são muito comuns no inglês do dia a dia.

Ago goes at the end

In Portuguese, há comes before the time: há dois anos. In English, ago comes after it: two years ago, a week ago, five minutes ago.Em português, o há vem antes do tempo: há dois anos. Em inglês, o ago vem depois: two years ago (há dois anos), a week ago (há uma semana), five minutes ago (há cinco minutos).

Teacher’s tip

Before you say a long noun group, build it from the noun backwards: friends → best friends → two best friends → my two best friends. Each new word goes to the left. It feels strange at first, but after a few days it becomes automatic.Antes de dizer um grupo longo com substantivo, monte de trás para a frente, a partir do substantivo: friends → best friends → two best friends → my two best friends. Cada palavra nova entra à esquerda. No começo parece estranho, mas depois de alguns dias fica automático.
