Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Substantivos Contáveis e IncontáveisArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersA1

Knowing whether a noun is countable or uncountable decides almost everything around it: the article (a/an), the plural, the verb (singular or plural) and the quantifier (many or much, few or little). And many words we count in Portuguese are uncountable in English.Saber se um substantivo é contável ou incontável define quase tudo à sua volta: o artigo (a/an), o plural, o verbo (singular ou plural) e o quantificador (many ou much, few ou little). E muitas palavras que contamos em português são incontáveis em inglês.

They have a singular and a plural, and they take numbers and a/an.Têm singular e plural e aceitam números e a/an.

A1 How to count uncountable nouns

To count an uncountable noun, put a unit or a container before it: a piece of, a glass of, a cup of, a kilo of. The unit goes into the plural, not the noun: two cups of coffee.Para contar um incontável, coloque uma unidade ou um recipiente antes dele: a piece of, a glass of, a cup of, a kilo of. Quem vai para o plural é a unidade, e não o substantivo: two cups of coffee.
