Each and every can both be translated as “cada” or “todo”, and very often both are correct. But they are not always the same: each looks at people or things one by one, while every looks at the whole group at once. Learn the small differences and a few useful patterns, and you will use them naturally. Each e every podem ser traduzidos como “cada” ou “todo”, e muitas vezes os dois estão certos. Mas nem sempre são iguais: each olha para as pessoas ou coisas uma por uma, enquanto every olha para o grupo inteiro de uma vez. Aprenda as pequenas diferenças e alguns padrões úteis, e você vai usar os dois com naturalidade.
A2 Each and every + singular noun
The most important rule is the same for both words: they go with a singular countable noun and a singular verb. In Portuguese we say “todos os alunos têm”, in the plural, but in English we say every student has, in the singular.A regra mais importante é a mesma para as duas palavras: elas vêm com um substantivo contável no singular e com o verbo no singular. Em português dizemos “todos os alunos têm”, no plural, mas em inglês dizemos every student has, no singular.
- Every student has a locker. (Todos os alunos têm um armário.)
- Each room has its own bathroom. (Cada quarto tem o seu próprio banheiro.)
- Every house on this street is painted white. (Todas as casas desta rua são pintadas de branco.)
- Each player gets two cards. (Cada jogador recebe duas cartas.)
Always singular
After each and every, the noun and the verb stay in the singular, even when the meaning is “all of them”: Every child likes ice cream, never “every children like”.Depois de each e every, o substantivo e o verbo ficam no singular, mesmo quando o sentido é “todos”: Every child likes ice cream (toda criança gosta de sorvete), nunca “every children like”.
Each: one by one
Use each when you are thinking of the people or things separately, one at a time. It works for two or more, so it is the only choice when there are just two: each hand, each side, each parent.Use each quando você pensa nas pessoas ou coisas separadamente, uma de cada vez. Funciona para dois ou mais, então é a única opção quando são só dois: each hand (cada mão), each side (cada lado), each parent (cada um dos pais).
- She was holding a bag in each hand. (Ela estava segurando uma sacola em cada mão.)
- The teacher talked to each student after the test. (A professora conversou com cada aluno depois da prova.)
Every: all of them together
Use every when you are thinking of the whole group, with no exceptions. It is close to all, and it needs three or more. That is why we say each eye, not “every eye”: we only have two.Use every quando você pensa no grupo inteiro, sem exceção. O sentido é próximo de all (todos), e ele precisa de três ou mais. Por isso dizemos each eye (cada olho), e não “every eye”: só temos dois.
- I’ve read every book in the series. (Já li todos os livros da série.)
- Every seat in the theater was taken. (Todos os lugares do teatro estavam ocupados.)
each
Individuals, one by one. Two or more.Os indivíduos, um por um. Dois ou mais.
Each child got a different present. (Cada criança ganhou um presente diferente.)
every
The whole group, no exceptions. Three or more.O grupo inteiro, sem exceção. Três ou mais.
Every child in the class passed. (Todas as crianças da turma passaram.)
Every for routines and repeated events
To say how often something happens, use every, not each. This is one of the most frequent uses of the word, and in Portuguese it usually becomes “todo dia”, “toda semana” or “a cada”.Para dizer com que frequência algo acontece, use every, e não each. Esse é um dos usos mais frequentes da palavra, e em português normalmente vira “todo dia”, “toda semana” ou “a cada”.
| Expression | Português | Example |
|---|---|---|
| every day | todo dia | I walk my dog every day. |
| every Monday | toda segunda-feira | We have a meeting every Monday. |
| every two hours | a cada duas horas | Take this medicine every two hours. |
| every other week | semana sim, semana não | My cousins visit every other week. |
| every time | toda vez que | Every time I call, she’s busy. |
| every now and then | de vez em quando | I eat fast food every now and then. |
Every day or everyday?
Every day, two words, means “todo dia”: I study every day. Everyday, one word, is an adjective that means “do dia a dia, comum”, and it comes before a noun: everyday clothes, everyday English.Every day, em duas palavras, significa “todo dia”: I study every day. (Estudo todo dia.) Everyday, numa palavra só, é um adjetivo que significa “do dia a dia, comum”, e vem antes de um substantivo: everyday clothes (roupas do dia a dia), everyday English (o inglês do dia a dia).
B1 Each of, every one of and each on its own
Before the, my, these or a pronoun like them and us, you need of. With each this is simple: each of. Every cannot go directly before of, so we say every one of, which is more emphatic. The verb is still singular in careful English.Antes de the, my, these ou de um pronome como them e us, você precisa de of. Com each é simples: each of. Já every não pode vir direto antes de of, então dizemos every one of, que dá mais ênfase. No inglês mais cuidadoso, o verbo continua no singular.
- Each of the rooms has a balcony. (Cada um dos quartos tem uma varanda.)
- Each of us brought something to eat. (Cada um de nós trouxe alguma coisa para comer.)
- Every one of my friends came to the party. (Todos os meus amigos, sem exceção, vieram à festa.)
- I answered every one of your emails. (Respondi a todos os seus e-mails, um por um.)
Every one or everyone?
Every one (two words) means “each single one” and is usually followed by of: every one of the cookies. Everyone (one word) means “todo mundo”: Everyone loved the cookies.Every one (duas palavras) significa “cada um, sem exceção” e normalmente vem seguido de of: every one of the cookies (todos os biscoitos). Everyone (uma palavra) significa “todo mundo”: Everyone loved the cookies. (Todo mundo adorou os biscoitos.)
Each without a noun
Each can stand alone as a pronoun. Every cannot: it always needs a noun or one after it. Each can also come after the subject or at the end of a sentence, especially with prices and amounts, where it means “cada um”.Each pode aparecer sozinho, como pronome. Every não pode: sempre precisa de um substantivo ou de one depois. Each também pode vir depois do sujeito ou no fim da frase, principalmente com preços e quantidades, e aí significa “cada um”.
| Position | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| alone | There are four bedrooms, and each has a fan. | São quatro quartos, e cada um tem um ventilador. |
| after the subject | We each paid fifty reais. | Cada um de nós pagou cinquenta reais. |
| at the end (prices) | The tickets cost twenty dollars each. | Os ingressos custam vinte dólares cada. |
| at the end (amounts) | The kids got three cookies each. | As crianças ganharam três biscoitos cada uma. |
Useful patterns with every
These combinations are very common in conversation, in texts and in exams. Notice how not every means “nem todo”, which is different from no (“nenhum”).Estas combinações são muito comuns em conversas, textos e provas. Repare que not every significa “nem todo”, o que é diferente de no (“nenhum”).
- Not every Brazilian likes soccer. (Nem todo brasileiro gosta de futebol.)
- Almost every store in the mall was closed. (Quase todas as lojas do shopping estavam fechadas.)
- She remembers every single detail. (Ela se lembra de cada detalhezinho.)
- Every student must bring their own laptop. (Todo aluno deve trazer o próprio notebook.)
His, her or their?
After each or every + person, modern English normally uses their when we do not know or do not need to say if the person is a man or a woman: Each guest has their own room. It sounds natural and is accepted in both everyday and formal English.Depois de each ou every + pessoa, o inglês atual normalmente usa their quando não sabemos ou não precisamos dizer se a pessoa é homem ou mulher: Each guest has their own room. (Cada hóspede tem o seu próprio quarto.) Soa natural e é aceito tanto no inglês do dia a dia quanto no formal.
