“Man arrested after bank robbery”, “Batteries not included”, “Children must be accompanied by an adult”: news headlines, signs, labels and notices are full of the passive, often in a short form with words missing. Once you know what is missing, they become easy to read.“Man arrested after bank robbery”, “Batteries not included”, “Children must be accompanied by an adult”: manchetes, placas, rótulos e avisos estão cheios de voz passiva, muitas vezes numa forma curta, com palavras faltando. Quando você sabe o que está faltando, fica fácil entender.
B1 Headlines: the passive without “be”
Headlines need to be short, so they leave out small words like a, the and the verb be. In a passive headline, only the past participle stays. When you read a noun followed by a verb ending in -ed (or an irregular participle like hit or found), think “was” or “has been”.As manchetes precisam ser curtas, então deixam de fora palavras pequenas como a, the e o verbo be. Numa manchete na passiva, só o particípio fica. Quando você lê um substantivo seguido de um verbo terminado em -ed (ou de um particípio irregular como hit ou found), pense em “foi” ou “já foi”.
| Headline | Full sentence | Português |
|---|---|---|
| Man arrested after bank robbery | A man has been arrested after a bank robbery. | Homem é preso após assalto a banco. |
| Concert cancelled due to storm | The concert has been cancelled because of a storm. | Show é cancelado por causa de tempestade. |
| Teen rescued from river | A teenager was rescued from a river. | Adolescente é resgatado de rio. |
| Coast hit by heavy rain | The coast has been hit by heavy rain. | Litoral é atingido por chuva forte. |
| Thousands left without power | Thousands of people have been left without electricity. | Milhares ficam sem energia. |
| New vaccine approved | A new vaccine has been approved. | Nova vacina é aprovada. |
Teacher’s tip: Portuguese does the same
Brazilian headlines also cut words and use the present: “Homem é preso”, “Show é cancelado”. English goes one step further and drops is too. So when you see Man arrested, read it as A man has been arrested. As manchetes brasileiras também cortam palavras e usam o presente: “Homem é preso”, “Show é cancelado”. O inglês vai um passo além e tira até o is. Então, quando você vir Man arrested, leia como A man has been arrested (Um homem foi preso).
Active or passive? Look at the verb
Headlines use the present simple for active news, even when it happened yesterday. So a verb with -s is active, and a past participle alone is passive. As manchetes usam o present simple para notícias na voz ativa, mesmo quando o fato aconteceu ontem. Então um verbo com -s está na ativa, e um particípio sozinho está na passiva.
Active: verb + -s
The subject did the action.O sujeito fez a ação.
Student wins science prize (Estudante ganha prêmio de ciências.)
Passive: past participle
Something was done to the subject.Alguém fez algo com o sujeito.
Student awarded science prize (Estudante recebe prêmio de ciências.)
The future and things in progress
For something planned, headlines use to be + past participle: it means “is going to be”. For something happening right now, they use being + past participle.Para algo planejado, as manchetes usam to be + particípio: significa “vai ser”. Para algo que está acontecendo agora, usam being + particípio.
- Old bridge to be rebuilt (A ponte antiga vai ser reconstruída.)
- Minimum wage to be raised in January (O salário mínimo vai ser reajustado em janeiro.)
- Suspect being questioned by police (Suspeito está sendo interrogado pela polícia.)
- Missing hikers still being searched for (Trilheiros desaparecidos continuam sendo procurados.)
Signs and labels
Signs, packages and shop windows also use short passives. Often is or are is missing, just like in headlines.Placas, embalagens e vitrines também usam passivas curtas. Muitas vezes o is ou o are some, igualzinho às manchetes.
Same idea, different grammar
Portuguese signs often use “Proibido” + verb or “Aceitamos”. English prefers the passive: Pets not allowed, Credit cards accepted. Don’t translate the Portuguese sign word for word (“Prohibited to smoke” sounds strange). As placas em português costumam usar “Proibido” + verbo ou “Aceitamos”. O inglês prefere a passiva: Pets not allowed, Credit cards accepted. Não traduza a placa em português palavra por palavra (“Prohibited to smoke” soa estranho).
B2 Reading the news and formal notices
At B2 you read real news, where headlines pack a lot of information into a few words. Many common headline verbs are short and dramatic, and they appear often in the passive. No nível B2 você lê notícias de verdade, em que as manchetes colocam muita informação em poucas palavras. Muitos verbos comuns em manchetes são curtos e fortes, e aparecem bastante na passiva.
| Headline verb | Meaning | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|---|
| urged | strongly asked | Mayor urged to fix city roads | Prefeito é pressionado a consertar as ruas |
| slammed | strongly criticised | New tax slammed by shop owners | Novo imposto é duramente criticado por lojistas |
| hit | badly affected | Farmers hit by long drought | Agricultores são afetados por longa seca |

| held | kept by police | Two men held after airport fight | Dois homens são detidos após briga no aeroporto |
| cleared | found not guilty | Driver cleared of all charges | Motorista é inocentado de todas as acusações |
Who did it? Look for “by”
When the agent matters, headlines keep by: Rio hit by floods, New tax slammed by shop owners. When there is no by, the agent is obvious (the police, the government) or unknown.Quando quem fez a ação importa, a manchete mantém o by: Rio hit by floods (Rio é atingido por enchentes), New tax slammed by shop owners. Quando não há by, quem fez é óbvio (a polícia, o governo) ou desconhecido.
Formal notices and announcements
Airports, hotels, schools and companies use full passive sentences to sound polite and impersonal. The passive takes away the “I order you” feeling.Aeroportos, hotéis, escolas e empresas usam frases completas na passiva para soar educados e impessoais. A passiva tira aquela sensação de “estou mandando em você”.
- Passengers are requested to keep their bags with them at all times. (Pedimos aos passageiros que mantenham suas malas sempre consigo.)
- Guests are kindly asked to check out by noon. (Pedimos gentilmente aos hóspedes que deixem o quarto até o meio-dia.)
- Students are reminded that phones must be switched off. (Lembramos aos alunos que os celulares devem ficar desligados.)

- Shoplifters will be prosecuted. (Quem for pego furtando será processado.)
- This area is monitored by security cameras. (Este local é monitorado por câmeras de segurança.)
Teacher’s tip: “Pedimos que…”
Portuguese notices often start with “Pedimos que…” or “Solicitamos que…”. In English, the most natural version is usually a passive: Customers are asked to…, Passengers are requested to…. It sounds polite without saying who is asking.Os avisos em português costumam começar com “Pedimos que…” ou “Solicitamos que…”. Em inglês, a versão mais natural costuma ser uma passiva: Customers are asked to…, Passengers are requested to…. Soa educado sem dizer quem está pedindo.
