Elas significam “não importa o quê, quando, onde ou quem” e ajudam você a soar fluente na conversa, em mensagens e em redações.

B1+ Meaning: any… at all

The -ever words mean “any” plus the idea of the question word: whatever = anything that, whoever = any person who, whenever = any time that, wherever = any place that. In Portuguese we usually say “o que”, “quem”, “quando” or “onde” + “quiser” or “for”.As palavras com -ever significam “qualquer” mais a ideia da palavra interrogativa: whatever = qualquer coisa que, whoever = qualquer pessoa que, whenever = a qualquer hora que, wherever = em qualquer lugar que. Em português costumamos dizer “o que”, “quem”, “quando” ou “onde” + “quiser” ou “for”.

B1+ No matter what: whatever happens

At the start of a sentence, the -ever words often mean “no matter what / who / where / when”. They show that the main idea is true in every situation. We can use no matter + question word with the same meaning. No começo da frase, as palavras com -ever muitas vezes significam “não importa o quê / quem / onde / quando”. Elas mostram que a ideia principal vale em qualquer situação. Podemos usar no matter + palavra interrogativa com o mesmo sentido.

Present tense for the future

The main clause can use will or the imperative.Assim como as orações com when e if, a oração com -ever usa o presente simples mesmo quando falamos do futuro: Aconteça o que acontecer amanhã, fique calmo. Keep the adjective next to however

B1+ Surprise questions and everyday expressions

In questions, -ever can show surprise, confusion or irritation, a bit like “afinal” or “raios” in Portuguese. Whatever happened to…? is a fixed expression for someone or something we have not heard about for a long time. In other questions, ever is often written separately: Who ever told you that?Em perguntas, -ever pode mostrar surpresa, confusão ou irritação, mais ou menos como “afinal” ou “raios” em português. Whatever happened to…? é uma expressão fixa para alguém ou algo de que não temos notícias há muito tempo. Em outras perguntas, ever costuma ser escrito separado: Who ever told you that? If you want to say that any option is fine, say “Anything is fine” or “I don’t mind”.Dito sozinho, “Whatever.” significa “tanto faz, não estou nem aí” e pode soar mal-educado, principalmente com um professor ou um chefe. Se você quer dizer que qualquer opção serve, diga “Anything is fine” ou “I don’t mind”.
