Comparatives and Superlatives

Comparativos e SuperlativosAdjectives and AdverbsA1–B2

We use the comparative to compare two things (taller than) and the superlative to single out one thing in a group (the tallest). The form depends on the length of the adjective: short ones take -er / -est, long ones take more / most.Usamos o comparativo para comparar duas coisas (taller than: mais alto que) e o superlativo para destacar uma entre várias (the tallest: o mais alto). A forma depende do tamanho do adjetivo: os curtos levam -er / -est, os longos levam more / most.

A1 Short adjectives: -er and -est

  • Mick is taller than Jack. (O Mick é mais alto que o Jack.)
  • Mick is the tallest person in the family. (O Mick é a pessoa mais alta da família.)

Short adjectives (one syllable, and two syllables ending in -y) add -er and -est. The spelling changes in three cases: final e, consonant-vowel-consonant and consonant + y.Adjetivos curtos (de uma sílaba, e de duas sílabas terminados em -y) recebem -er e -est. A grafia muda em três casos: final em e, consoante-vogal-consoante e consoante + y.
