So Am I, Neither Do I

So e NeitherAuxiliary VerbsA2

“Eu também!” and “Nem eu!” are some of the most frequent replies in any conversation. In English, besides me too and me neither, we use short structures like So am I and Neither do I. They sound natural and fluent, and they are a favorite in tests.“Eu também!” e “Nem eu!” estão entre as respostas mais frequentes em qualquer conversa. Em inglês, além de me too e me neither, usamos estruturas curtas como So am I e Neither do I. Elas soam naturais e fluentes, e são as queridinhas das provas.

A2 So: agreeing with a positive sentence

When someone says something positive and it is also true for you, answer with So + auxiliary + subject. It means “eu também”. Notice the word order: the auxiliary comes before the subject, like in a question.

So+auxiliary / be / modal+subject
  • “I’m hungry.” “So am I.” (“Estou com fome.” “Eu também.”)
  • “I love açaí.” “So do I.” (“Eu amo açaí.” “Eu também.”)
  • “I went to the concert on Saturday.” “So did I!” (“Fui ao show no sábado.” “Eu também!”)
  • “I can play the guitar.” “So can I.” (“Eu sei tocar violão.” “Eu também.”)

Choose the right auxiliary

The secret is to look at the verb in the first sentence. If it has be, a modal or an auxiliary, repeat it. If it is a simple verb in the present or past (like, work, went), use do, does or did.O segredo é olhar o verbo da primeira frase. Se é um verbo simples no presente ou no passado (like, work, went), use do, does ou did.

First sentence has…ExamplePortuguês
am / is / are“I’m from Bahia.” “So am I.”“Sou da Bahia.” “Eu também.”
was / were“I was late.” “So was I.”“Eu me atrasei.” “Eu também.”
present simple“I work at night.” “So do I.”“Trabalho à noite.” “Eu também.”
past simple“I loved the movie.” “So did I.”“Adorei o filme.” “Eu também.”
have / has (perfect)“I’ve been to Chile.” “So have I.”“Já fui ao Chile.” “Eu também.”
can / will / would“I’ll be there.” “So will I.”“Vou estar lá.” “Eu também.”

Teacher’s tip

Ask yourself: “How would I make a question with this sentence?” The auxiliary of the question is the one you use: You like pizza → Do you like pizza? → So do I.Pergunte a si mesmo: “Como eu faria uma pergunta com esta frase?” O auxiliar da pergunta é o que você usa: You like pizza → Do you like pizza? → So do I.

A2 Neither: agreeing with a negative sentence

When someone says something negative and it is also true for you, answer with Neither + auxiliary + subject. It means “nem eu” or “eu também não”. The auxiliary is affirmative, because neither is already negative.

Neither / Nor+affirmative auxiliary+subject
  • “I don’t like horror movies.” “Neither do I.” (“Não gosto de filme de terror.” “Nem eu.”)
  • “I’m not ready for the test.” “Neither am I.” (“Não estou pronto para a prova.” “Nem eu.”)
  • “I didn’t sleep well.” “Nor did I.” (“Não dormi bem.” “Nem eu.”)
  • “I can’t swim.” “Neither can I.” (“Não sei nadar.” “Eu também não.”)
  • “I haven’t seen the new episode.” “Neither have I.” (“Não vi o episódio novo.” “Nem eu.”)

No double negatives

Neither or nor?

Neither and nor mean the same here. Neither is more common in conversation. Neither can be pronounced in two ways, with the sound of “need” or the sound of “night”; both are correct.Neither e nor significam a mesma coisa aqui.

A2 Me too, me neither and other people

In informal conversation, Me too (after positive sentences) and Me neither (after negative sentences) are very common and always correct. You may also hear Me either in the US, but it is very informal.

positive: me too / so

The first sentence is affirmative.A primeira frase é afirmativa.

“I’m tired.” “Me too.” / “So am I.” (“Estou cansado.” “Eu também.”)

negative: me neither / neither

The first sentence is negative.A primeira frase é negativa.

“I’m not tired.” “Me neither.” / “Neither am I.” (“Não estou cansado.” “Nem eu.”)

Talking about other people

The structure works with any subject, not only I. Just change the auxiliary to match the new subject: does for he, she and it; is or has when needed.A estrutura funciona com qualquer sujeito, não só com I. É só ajustar o auxiliar ao novo sujeito: does para he, she e it; is ou has quando for o caso.

  • I play volleyball, and so does my sister. (Eu jogo vôlei, e a minha irmã também.)
  • Rafael isn’t coming, and neither is Bruna.
  • My dad has visited Portugal, and so has my mom.

A2 Disagreeing: I do, I don’t

If the sentence is not true for you, don’t use so or neither. Answer with subject + auxiliary, the opposite of the first sentence. We often add Really? or Oh, to sound friendly.

“I love spicy food.” “Really? I don’t.”“Adoro comida apimentada.” “Sério? Eu não.”positive → negative
“I’m not hungry.” “Oh, I am.”“Não estou com fome.” “Ah, eu estou.”negative → positive
“I didn’t like the ending.” “I did!”“Não gostei do final.” “Eu gostei!”negative → positive
“I can drive.” “I can’t.”“Eu sei dirigir.” “Eu não sei.”positive → negative
  • “I’ve never eaten sushi.” “Really? I have. It’s great!” (“Nunca comi sushi.” “Sério? Eu já. É ótimo!”)
  • “I’m going to the party.” “I’m not. I have to study.” (“Vou à festa.” “Eu não. Tenho que estudar.”)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ “I’m tired.” “So do I.” ✓ “So am I.”Se a primeira frase usa be, a resposta também usa be.

✗ “I like rock.” “So I do.” ✓ “So do I.”Para concordar, a ordem é So + auxiliar + sujeito.

✗ “I don’t eat meat.” “Me too.” ✓ “Me neither.”Depois de frase negativa, use me neither ou neither do I.

✗ “I can’t dance.” “Neither can’t I.” ✓ “Neither can I.”Neither já é negativo: o auxiliar fica na afirmativa.

✗ “I watched the game.” “So do I.” ✓ “So did I.”Frase no passado pede did na resposta.
