Can is a modal verb. It is the same for all subjects, it has no -s, and the next verb is in the base form without to. The negative is can’t (cannot) and in questions can comes before the subject. Can é um verbo modal. É igual para todos os sujeitos, não tem -s, e o verbo seguinte fica na forma base, sem to. A negativa é can’t (cannot) e nas perguntas o can vem antes do sujeito.

B1 Be able to, managed to and was able to
Can has only two forms: can and could. For other tenses and structures we use be able to: after will, in the present perfect, after other modals and after verbs like want or hope. Can só tem duas formas: can e could. Para outros tempos e estruturas usamos be able to: depois de will, no present perfect, depois de outros modais e depois de verbos como want ou hope.

For a specific success on one occasion in the past, we do not use could in affirmative sentences. We use was / were able to or managed to (which suggests difficulty). In the negative, couldn’t is fine for both general and specific situations.Para um sucesso específico numa ocasião no passado, não usamos could em frases afirmativas. Usamos was / were able to ou managed to (que sugere dificuldade). Na negativa, couldn’t serve tanto para situações gerais quanto específicas.
General ability: could

B2 Possibility and could have
